MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional 8.1.1 review

If you are looking for a disk partitioning utility which is easy, fast and reliable, Minitool Partition Wizard Professional Edition will be a good option. It has got all the features and utilities necessary to do the disk partition.

Minitool Partition Wizard Professional Edition 8.1.1

I was on the look out for a good partition management tool especially for reliable partition recovery. I have used Command line tool called TestDisk before as well as other software like Paragon Partition Manager (free edition) . Though TestDisk offers basic as well as advanced recovery options, It lacks various features and easy to use UI as TestDisk obviously is a command line based tool. On the other hand, Paragon Partition Manager is user friendly and has a intuitive GUI. I've used paragon partition manager a few years back and I remember while resizing an NTFS partition it got stalled/frozen for quite a time before resuming.

I was suggested to try Partition Wizard in a technical forum (message board). So, I decided to go and get the Minitool Partition Wizard. This is comparatively a small download 14.3 MB only. Installation was quick and easy with a wizard interface.

Minitool Partition Wizard Professional edition supports partition alignment which is a important factor when you are using SSD (Solid State Disk) as it affects the life of the SSD unlike conventional hard drives. On Basic disks, Partition Wizard supports align whole disk as well as align single partition. It has options like converting dynamic disk to basic disk and GPT partition table into MBR and vice versa.MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional Align partition

I tried to move and resize my data partition in a dynamic disk with Partition Wizard. After resizing and when I press apply, Partition Wizard asked to restart the system to complete the move-resizing operations. On restart, when Windows starts booting, Partition Wizard console interface shows up and asked to press any key to quit the pending operations. After 5 seconds, Partition Wizard finished resizing and moving partitions quickly enough. I tried creating a simple volume with the Partition Wizard and after entering partition size, It asked to restart the system to create new partition on a dynamic disk. So, Partition Wizard prefers not to apply it's operations like create, move/resize partitions "on the fly", at least in a dynamic disk. Rather, it waits for the Windows operating system to restart so as a script runs the operations before Windows booting process is completed. But, on a basic disk with GPT partitions, I can create new partitions on the free space instantaneously without any delay with Partition Wizard.MiniTool Partition Wizard partition context menuMiniTool Partition Wizard move resizeMiniTool Partition Wizard move resizeMiniTool Partition Wizard restart move resize

Main features

  1. Convert disk types: It can convert dynamic disk to basic and vice versa. It can convert partition table types also. From GPT to MBR and vice versa. The operations are fast and will be completed after reboot.

  2. Merge partitions: It shows a two step menu to choose the partition that will be expanded adding adjacent partition. This is possible only with NTFS partition types and FAT partitions needs to be converted to NTFS format prior to merging partitions.

  3. Splitting partitions: There is a "Split partitions" option listed under partition menu in Partition Wizard. However, When I tried to split a partition, it says "Cannot split partition. No free MBR Slot". So, this option may not work with Windows 7 and higher versions, since they use GPT file system by default which supports UEFI instead of BIOS. MBR (Master Boot Record) is supported only in BIOS system.

  4. Extend partitions: Partition Wizard menu can extend partition by using unused space in adjacent partitions.

  5. Copy operation allows copying partitions to unallocated free space.

  6. There is a Partition recovery wizard available which can scan for partitions either on whole disk, unallocated space and scan specified sectors.

  7. It has a secure wipe utility which can wipe partitions or whole disk. Various secure wiping methods are available with wipe utility.

  8. Besides these operations, Partition Wizard can convert partitions from FAT to NTFS and vice versa. It can format partitions into FAT, NTFS and Linux file system types of Ext2, Ext3 and Ext4. Linux swap partition type is also supported.

Apart from above listed operations, Minitool Partition Wizard supports many operations such as set or unset active partition, setting Label for the partition, change drive letter, hide partition, change cluster size and various other properties. Partition Wizard cannot invoke hard drive or SSD's Secure erase function .

Overall, this application is fast and reliable in doing partition changes and it has a nice UI with options arranged properly and user friendly. Tools like Partition Wizard are better alternative to DiskPart and Windows Disk Manager which by default comes with Windows. Partition Wizard is a small download and with an efficient user interface, Partition Wizard can be used even by novices as well as experts easily.
