Windows 10 is currently in preview stage and it is a wise idea to install any pre-release software on a virtual machine to avoid unexpected problems for your primary work computer. Many people have reported that they failed to get Windows 10 installed on Oracle VM VirtualBox. Windows 10 works like a charm on VMWare Workstation 10 and I have been using it without any issues.
If you don't have VMWare Workstation 10, you can download it from https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/info/slug/desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_workstation/10_0. It is a paid software but can get a trial version from here - http://www.vmware.com/products/workstation/workstation-evaluation
After you install the "Workstation 10", you need to create a New Virtual Machine.Steps to install Windows 10 on VMware Workstation
Follow the steps below to install and use Windows 10 on VMware:
Step 1: Click on "Create new Virtual Machine" on the main dashboard in the Workstation 10. Alternatively, you can go to the "File" menu and then select "New Virtual Machine"
Step 2: In the next screen, select "Typical" installation, unless you are keen on doing a highly customized installation.
Step 3: In the next step, choose the option "Installer disc image file (iso)" and select your Windows 10 ISO image. If you don't have it yet, read how to download and use Windows 10 ISO files.
Step 4: In the screen to select the Guest OS, choose the option "Microsoft Windows" and in the Version field, select "Windows 8". The current version of VMWare Workstation do not list Windows 10 as an option, so you can select "Windows 8" and proceed with the installation.
Step 5: Give a name for your Virtual Machine. You can choose a relevant name like "Windows 10 Test PC". You may leave the default location or choose to organize all your virtual machines to be in a custom folder.
Step 6: In this step, you need to select the disk capacity for your virtual machine. The minimum hardware requirements is 16Gb for 32-bit and 20Gb for 64 bit Windows. I would allocate a bit more space to comfortably install other software and apps in your Windows. The screen shows I have selected 32Gb for my virtual machine. Read more about hardware requirements for Windows 10.
Step 7: In the next screen, you will see a summary of the configuration you selected. If you like to change any hardware configuration like RAM, click on the "Customize Hardware" button. You can increase or decrease the RAM allocation from the popup screen.
When you are ready, click on the "Finish" button to create the virtual machine according to the configuration you have selected.
In the VMware Workstation dashboard, you can see your new machine listed. Select the correct name on the left panel and then select "Power on this Virtual Machine". When the machine starts, it will automatically start the installation from the attached ISO image.
