On Sep 30, 2014, Microsoft announced Windows 10 OS. The previous version was Windows 8 and the company surprised everyone by skipping the expected number in their version. Why no Windows 9?
Windows 8 was not well received by the consumers and Microsoft is well aware of the hesitation the users have in adopting to a newer version of Windows. Most Windows 7 users are sticking to their OS and refused to upgrade to 8. Company wanted to give an impression to the consumers that the next version of Windows will be something built from the ground-up but at the same time without forcing the users to learn a new interface. By giving a new name, Microsoft has succeeded in generating a lot of interest and enthusiasm among the consumers. Microsoft hasn't revealed the full list of new features coming up in Windows 10, but if you read the official announcements and watch the videos, you can conclude that they are adopting a "mobile-first, cloud-first" strategy. The new Windows is expected to have tight integration with Windows 10 tech preview can be downloaded on Oct 1, 2014. The tech preview is definitely not a fully cooked Windows. This release is meant to give an early preview of what is going to be in the final release. Also, Microsoft expects to make a lot of revisions, enhancements and changes during the next 2 years of development cycle. The tech preview will have only a limited set of features and are expected to have bugs and problems.
