Are you looking to buy the new HTC Desire 820? The 64-Bit Octa-Core smartphone which is an upgrade version of the Desire 816 was recently launched in an event in Delhi. Read the article to know the design, features, price, availability & review of the new 820.

HTC's Desire range of smartphones are doing very well in Indian market. The Taiwanese company has grown quite popular in few years because of these mid-range smartphones. This year itself, HTC launched multiple new phones including Desire 310 Dual SIM, Desire 210 Dual SIM, Desire 516 Dual SIM, Desire 616 Dual SIM and Desire 816- all of which are quite competitively priced. Recently, the company launched the top model in the Desire family- Desire 820. Price of this phone is not yet known as it will be announced by the company only in early November when the device goes on sale.

The main highlight of this highly anticipated phone is its octa-core 64-bit Qualcomm processor with integrated LTE modem. As I was present at its Delhi launch event, I laid my hands on this device and got a basic feel of it. Continue reading the article to know more about the Desire 820.

Design: Look & feel

The new Desire smartphone looks very similar to the Desire 816 as it has the same plastic body but weighs 10 grams less. The device is available in blue, pink, white and black colors. It has beautiful curved edges which give it a good feel. As it is very light weight (only 155 grams), it is easy to hold. Its dimensions are 157.7 x 78.74 x 7.74mm.

The front is dominated by a long & wide 5.5-inch (720x1280-pixelq) LCD display which has thin bezels around it like in other high-end Desire smartphones. Typing on the screen would be thus convenient even for people with big palms. Colors are refreshingly vibrant. On the right edge, power button is provided along with the volume rocker and on the left edge, a microSD slot & two Nano-SIM slots are provided under a flap.

Features & specifications

Power & performance

The HTC Desire 820 is powered by 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC which has integrated 4G LTE. This processor which is the highlight of the 820 has four 1GHz and four 1.5GHz cores. The new device is mated with 2GB RAM. Its predecessor Desire 816 came with only 1.5GB RAM. Performance is definitely improved. In the limited testing time I had, I found that there was no lag time while launching apps, switching between them or surfing internet. Multitasking was very smooth.

Storage & software

Internal storage space is good 16GB which can be further expanded up to 128GB via microSD card.

It runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat with HTC's Sense 6 UI and comes with various software customizations including Zoe & BlinkFeed.

The HTC phone has a good 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, f/2.2 aperture and BSI sensor. The primary camera has all relevant features like geo-tagging, face detection, touch focus, image recording, HDR and HD video. It records 1080p videos at 30fps. An 8-megapixel front camera is also provided which records 720p videos at 60fps. I clicked few images at the event. Image quality was impressive. Even the images taken under low light conditions turned out to be amazing. If you are a selfie aficionado, you would love this device as it has a long list of image-editing features. You can use Photo Booth to arrange multiple moments into a single image or Live Makeup to set the level of skin smoothing before you click a picture or merge your picture with someone else's. You can do so much with your images.

Connectivity options

The device has all standard connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS/ A-GPS, GPRS/ EDGE and 4G LTE.

The Desire 820 must be having a good battery life. At the event, I didn't have much time to try the battery life but as it is packed with good 2600mAh battery, battery life seems promising.

Pricing & Verdict

The price of HTC Desire 820 will be revealed by the company only when the product goes on sale in November this year but it is expected to be somewhere between Rs. 20000 and 30000. As the price is not yet confirmed, I don't know whether this device offers value for money but undoubtedly, it is a very incremental upgrade to the HTC Desire 816. There are a lot of impressive improvements & new additions.
