Are you wondering how to back up your files in Fedora OS? Are you looking for easy way to back up files? Here is the tutorial which helps you to back up file with several handy options for you. Here I have given screen by screen procedure to install back up software and using it.

Backup in Fedora OS - There are a lot of applications available for Fedora OS to backup files. My favorite tool is Deja-Dup. Using this application is very easy. Deja-Dup provides the interface for the duplicity backup tool. The backup archives gets generated by rsync file. This application is not available by default and so you need to install it. Installation is very simple and can done by a single command. To install, first switch to root user and write the below command.

#yum install deja-dup -y

It is a 26 MB file and installs dependency packages along with Deja-Dup application,

How to use Deja-Dup application

Once you launch the app there will be two option. One for restoring files from a previous backup and the other to setup backup. Let's have a look at how to setup a new backup.
Fedora backup
1. Click on 'Just show my backup settings'
2. It will open a tabbed window with options like Overview, Storage, Folders and Schedule.
3. In the Overview you will find option Backup Up Now, press on it start the backup process.

Changing the storage location

You can also change the location of backup files to be stored. There is option to store your backup files to a FTP or cloud storage. They are tricky and you need to know about FTP process to proceed. I am concentrating on beginners and lets see how to change the location in your own laptop storage.

1. Click on the storage tab.
2. In Backup location choose 'Local Folder'.
3. In folder mention the path where you need to store your backup files.

Choosing which folder to backup

You can specify the folder that you need to backup. Follow the below steps to do it.
Deja-Dup backup
1. Open Folders tab.
2. In Folders to back up grid you need to add the folders you want to back up. Click on the '+' symbol to add and '-' symbol to delete wrongly added folder.
3. If you choose the folder as a whole say Home, it contains many folders like Pictures, Downloads, Documents, Trash etc. If you don't want to back up Downloads and Trash then add it to the 'Folders to ignore' grid.

Other features

You can also encrypt and schedule the backup. To schedule, open schedule tab and choose the interval you want Deja-Dup to do automatic backup. Whenever you backup, it will prompt for encryption. You can either choose it or ignore it. You can restore the back up files to their original location or some other place. It is easy and just a you are going to select it graphically. It will take some time to complete the process.

Other back up software

There are many other software but they are not as easy as Deja-Dup. Other back up software don't have graphical interface. However there are some tools which I suggest you to use. Tools like BackupPC and Amanda are good one to back up files. BackupPC compresses your file and then stores it which saves your hard disk space a lot. With Amanda you can take a backup of files from the system connected to the network.
