How to start a blog and make it popular

There are millions of bloggers out there on internet but there are only few blogs out there which are read by millions. Success of a blog depends primarily on how many people read it and not just how great information you have posted, unless you write it just for your own satisfaction and don't care if others read it or not.

You probably came to this post through Google or other referral links. At least that is how 99% of the readers of this post find it.

I just shared one of the best tips for successful blogging - your post should be visible in search results and should have lot of referral links pointing to it from other sites. This is the key to the success of almost all blogs.

Most people post blogs expecting others will read it and enjoy it. Few others write for self satisfaction. I started my first website in year 2000 for learning web development and for my own satisfaction. The blog served the purpose very well and continued so for about 4 years until I learnt that I can make money out of it.

Even when the purpose of my blog was self satisfaction, I wouldn't be happy unless many people read it. The more people come to my log, the more happier I was.

Once I learnt I can make revenue from an online blog, the purpose of blogging slightly changed. I started looking for topics that can earn money and explored options to make better revenue. I slowly changed to a professional blogger. I will cover my success story in another post and will focus on how to make a blog popular in this post.

How to make a blog popular

Hundreds of people start new blogs everyday. They will publish few posts very enthusiastically for few months before they lose interest and abandon the blogs. Why does this happen?

One of the primary reasons behind abandoned blogs is, there are no readers. If there are no one to read, it is almost like a shop where no one ever buy anything. So, the key to the success of a blog is, get people to read it.

People find content on internet primarily through 2 channels:

1. Search engines

2. Referral links

Traffic from search engines: Optimize your blog for search engines

Very rarely people will remember a website url and look there for specific information. Of course official product websites and social networking websites are exceptions. For example, if you want to learn more about the latest Apple iPad, you may obviously go directly to the Apple website. However, I am sure before you purchase an iPad, you will search in Google for reviews. This is what you take advantage of. People always depend on search engines to find that they need on internet. So, your blog or website can get lot of visitors if it appears in search results like Google. I will post more about how to get your website listed in search engines.

Referral Links: Get other websites link to your site

Referral links is the second best form of traffic to any websites. If you can get links to your website from other websites, that will bring traffic in many ways:
  • Readers of other websites will follow the link to your site and read your posts which will increase your traffic.

  • When search engines see links to your posts from other sites, it will consider your site as an important source of information and will increase your site's rating in their search index. This will indirectly increase your traffic through search results.

  • In the olden days, most webmasters used to depend on Link Exchange to get traffic to their webpages. However, after a recent update by Google (called "Panda Updates"), link exchange is no more considered as a valid website promotion technique. However, there are several other ways to get links to your web pages and promote your website. Read best practices for webmasters to learn more about how to organically promote your website by following the rules.
