Google+ policies for dummies

Webmasters and bloggers is busy creating Google+ Pages and promoting their websites and blogs, but not many are aware of some of the Google+ policies they may be violating. Here is a quick summary of Google+ policies that everyone must be aware of before creating Pages to promote their brands in Google+

Google+ has published detailed Google+ policies and rules but how many of us have read it? I went through it before I created my first Google+ Page but did not pay attention to many of the details.

Today I spent a lot of time reading and analyzing the Google+ policies and have composed a quick list of policies that many people may be violating unknowingly. Please be aware that this list is based on my understanding on the Google+ Pages policies. I strongly recommend you read the official Google+ User Content and Conduct Policy as well.

Here is the list of Google+ policies:

  1. You cannot use Google+ for any illegal activities or to promote any dangerous/illegal acts. What is illegal is debatable since the laws are different for each country.
  2. You should not aggressively add people to your circles.
  3. Do not spam by sending unwanted promotional or commercial content.
  4. Do not try to manipulate your Page's ranking by using any techniques.
  5. Do not use non relevant keywords or meta data in your Google+ Page/Profile to get listed in search for those keywords
  6. Do not use sexually explicit content and nudity in Google+
  7. Do not drive traffic from Google+ to porn sites.
  8. Profile photo should not be offensive and should not have close up of certain body parts, which you can guess what it is.
  9. Do not create Google+ Pages or Profiles to impersonate others including brands and people.
  10. Do not use fake names for your profile. You can use only your legal name or the name with which you are generally known among your friends and family.
  11. Running contests, sweepstakes, offers, coupons or other such promotions are not allowed. However, you may host such promotions in an external website and provide a link to that promotion from your Google+ Page/Profile.
  12. You cannot use Google+ for hate speech or violence against others.
  13. You cannot publish confidential information of others. What information is confidential is debatable. Obviously information like credit card number etc are confidential, but information like address, email id, family details could be considered as confidential in some cases. For example, you can publish address of a business but it may be considered as violation of policy if you post the address of few individuals.
  14. Content that present children in a sexual manner is not allowed.

This is a good compilation of the policies framed by Google. People tend to use social networks without any concern for social security or ethical behaviour. Having a good understanding of the policies will definitely help one stay away from committing violations. The kind of activity we see on Facebook is a good example of how it goes wrong if you pay no attention to ethics.
