Review of Maruti's Celerio- design, ride quality and price

Are you looking to buy a new car? Maruti's gearless Celerio is all out in market. Read the article to know its features, price and our review. The design, ride quality and the competitors' offerings are discussed here in detail.

Maruti was out of market for some time but now it is back with hatchback called Clelerio. Maruti's Celerio was recently launched in Auto Expo and there is a lot of buzz around this car. Automatic cars are easy to drive, problem free and very practical for city driving. Yet these cars failed to take off in India before. This is because their high cost, lower acceleration and lower fuel economy are big drawbacks in Indian market. Automatic cars are usually costly, they slow off the gas guzzlers and the mark but the new Celerio is all set to prove us wrong. This Maruti car is the replacement for the under-performing A Star.

Among premium cars, there are numerous options for cars with automatic transmission but in the small car segment, the number of options is very limited. Thus, Celerio has huge market segment to capture. This article gives you all the features and our review of this gearless wonder.

Styling and design

The design isn't exactly new. The front part appears like an amalgamation of Maruti's Estilo and Toyota Etios. The car is big and proportionate as well. Celerio has a longer platform than the old A Star. The design is decent- neither ugly nor too appealing. What gives the car a little different look are the creases and lines at the sides. It is high time now that Maruti works on designing.

From inside, the car looks much similar to other contemporary models of Maruti. Everything appears convenient- you get everything where it is expected to be and nothing is out of place but this practical nature of the hatchback has left little space for creativity. There is ample space in the rear end. You can further use the option of 60:40 split-flexibility in the rear seats to increase the luggage capacity. The rear is very similar to Alto 800. There is sufficient headroom, legroom and we can say that overall, the cabin is roomy. Celerio measures 3600 mm in length, 1600 mm in width and 1560 mm in height. The car looks boxy and simple from inside as well as from outside. The use of plastic is overplayed but I can say that the quality of plastic used is far better than the one in A Star. The levers and the knob are also more durable. Features like electronic power steering, steering mounted controls with audio switches and Bluetooth connectivity are the add-ons given in the top end ZXi variant.

Ride quality

Like most Maruti cars including A Star, Estilo and Wagon R, Celerio is also powered by a 1 lire K series engine. This gives a maximum power of 68 Ps @ 6000 rpm and 90 Nm @ 3500 rpm torque. The company had claimed that this car will be more refined and silent on the power train but I didn't find it any different from other cars at least in the manual 5-speed.

Celerio does not have a clutch pedal and there is no need to change gears as it uses the auto gear shift technology. This technology is expected to revolutionize driving in India. I slotted the lever into D and the car started rolling ahead. The gear shift is not seamless but is quite efficient. This is a highly convenient, easy to drive car for the congested roads of India. It has a good fuel economy of 23.1 Kpl. The manual and the automatic- both the cars are equally fuel efficient. I drove the car in uneven terrains and found the ride quality quite even and smooth. The ground clearance of 165 mm and the wheelbase of 2425 mm provide Celerio good stability on Indian roads.

Maruti has emphasized safety in this model by introducing a myriad of safety features including dual airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and rear window viper for clear visibility.

Maruti Wagon R and Hyundai i10 are the major competitors of Celerio. Maruti's gearless wonder is roomier than Wagon R and i10 but it lacks in height if seen against Wagon R. While the dimensions of Celerio are 3600x 1600x 1560 mm, that of i10 are 3585x 1595x 1550 mm and that of Maruti Wagon R are 3585x 1595x 1550 mm. Ground clearance of all three cars is same (165 mm). Celerio scores over i10 and Wagon R with a much greater wheelbase of 2425 mm and greater boot space of 235 litres. If we talk of the fuel economy, Celerio is again the leader with fuel economy of 23.1 kpl while Wagon R has fuel economy of 20.51 kpl and i10 has 19.81 kpl only. But then the capacity of i10 is much greater (1086 cc). Celerio and Wagon R have equivalent capacity (998 cc). There is not much difference in the power and torque of the three models and the prices are also similar with a difference of not more than 30,000 depending on the variant you choose.

The automatic version of Maruti Celerio price in Kerala is about Rs. 4.29 lakh. This is only Rs. 40,000 more expensive than the with-gear version. Currently, there is no cheaper automatic car in market.

The new Maruti Celerio has uninspiring styling. The interiors and exteriors are both unappealing and users who value style over functionality will not like this car. The company offers no top of the line variant with auto gear shift. So, users get no airbags. But, yes if convenience and price are your criteria, Celerio is a great option in the current automobile market.
