Read on how to synchronize your mobile phone number with your Google+ account, how to personalize the type of notifications you receive through SMS and updating your status through SMS service

It was a surprise news for me when I came to know that after US, India is the second country where Google has activated the SMS notification and status update service through mobile and smartphones. The obvious reason for this is that after US the highest number of Google+ users are from India. Now just like Facebook you can receive notifications on your mobile phones and post updates. Read on to know how to activate this service and how to personalize the option on the type of updates you want to receive.

How to activate Google+ SMS service?

Setting up SMS notifications for Google+ is very simple. Click on your name in the top Google bar as shown in the image (where you get the sign out option) and go to account settings. Now select Google+ in the new windows as shown in the image. Here you get a option to activate SMS service. Just select the country and enter your mobile number. A verification code will be sent to your mobile phone as SMS, type it in the verification box and you are done.

Now you can select the type of notifications you want to receive as SMS. You can post an update by sending a SMS to 9222222222. Google does not charge anything for this service but your normal SMS charges will apply.

Any post through SMS on Google+ will have public visibility but by adding the following text after the post you can customize its sharing.
  • @[circle name] – To make your SMS post visible to selected Circles in Google plus.
  • @extended – To make your SMS post visible to your extended circles.
  • @public – To set your SMS post visibility to public including search engines.
  • @[email address] – To make your SMS post visible to a particular person.

This is going to be a great convenient to users who still don't have an internet connected phone or don't want to spend their balance for social networking purposes.
