How to Install iOS 7 on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch

Updating your current operating system to iOS 7 is a fairly simple process, but make sure you have your data backed up before proceeding for an upgrade.

iOS 7 adds new dimensions to your Apple device in terms of looks and functionality; it is also the biggest and most advanced iOS overhaul yet. You can upgrade your current operating system to iOS 7 for iPhone 4, 4s and 5, iPad 2, 3, 4, and the iPad mini, and also the 5th generation iPod touch by following these few simple steps.

Clean Up and Back Up

Since the iOS update is an extensive process, it provides you good reason to de-clutter your Apple device and get rid of contacts, messages and apps you seldom use. Then move on to transfer the remaining data on to the newest iOS version.

The first crucial step is to de-clutter your iCloud storage, so that a slow iCloud service does not come in the way of the update process. Begin by syncing your camera roll with iTunes, then move on to the manage storage option in your iOS device to manually maneuver which apps you want to sync with the iCloud and which ones you'd want to remove. You can remove an app from the iCloud by simply turning off the backup storage option present next to every app in the manage storage feature.

To check if iCloud back up is enabled, go to the storage and backup segment in the iCloud feature on your Settings list. You have your backup intact if the iCloud back up feature is at ON position. If that is not the case, you can manually generate backup by tapping on the 'Back Up Now' icon in the storage and backup segment.

To minimize the risk of losing your data in the event of iOS update, make sure you generate back up for the data on your tablet, smartphone or media player through iTunes; you can back up all your important data including Settings, In-App purchases, Documents, Messages, Games, and Camera Roll here.

In order to generate back up on iTunes, connect your device to the computer using the data cable. If you are using iTunes 11, click on the iOS device icon present on the right side of the iTunes window. Go to the backup feature, and click on the back up now option in the manually backup and restore segment. The iTunes 10.7 users can begin the backup process by clicking on the iOS device option in the iTunes source listing, and selecting the backup option in the menu. You must allow the backup operation to finish before proceeding to the update. The apps, TV shows, books, movies, and music purchased from iTunes remain in the iCloud storage, so you do not need to worry about creating a backup for these.

Updating to iOS7

There are two ways of updating to iOS 7 – you can either use the over-the-air option or rely on the iTunes hook up.

Over-the air

Over-the-air upgrade process is fairly simple – you get a prompt regarding the availability of software upgrade; all you need to do is follow the instructions and get the new iOS going. If you still like doing thing manually, you can get the iOS 7 upgrade by going to the software update option in the general settings segment.

iTunes hook up

For getting the iOS7 through iTunes hook up, users need to connect their iOS device to their computers and open the iTunes window. There will be a prompt for update on the left side. You can get iOS7 on your Apple device by simply clicking on the download and update option.

If you feel the iOS update is taking longer than expected or the prompt button is bouncing back repeatedly, it may well be due to a heavy traffic of update requests on the Apple server. It is best to abort the update process at this stage, and revisit it once the rush has subsided.
