Download Windows Phone 7.5 SDK

Are you a Windows developer, with an interest in Mobile application development? Windows Phone 7.5 Mango release is in the market now. Download the Windows Phone SDK 7.1 for Windows Phone 7.5 and get started with app development.

Windows Phone SDK 7.1 is ready for download. Get ready to start developing great Windows Phone Apps. It's bit confusing, but the SDK for Windows Phone 7.5 is called Windows Phone SDK 7.1. The cool thing is, you can use this SDK to develop mobile applications for both Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 7.5

You can download the Windows Phone SDK 7.1 from Microsoft website.

The SDK include a lot of tools required to support mobile application development for Windows Phone. The web installer is a pretty small file with about 3mb size.

The new Windows Phone SDK 7.1 includes Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone, Windows Phone Emulator, assemblies for Windows Phone SDK, Silverlight 4 SDK and DRT, extensions for XNA Game Studio 4.0, Microsoft Expression Blend SDK for Windows Phone 7 & 7.1, Microsoft Advertising SDK for Windows Phone etc.

The SDK will work on all editions of Windows 7 and Windows Vista except starter edition, but Windows XP and Windows 8 are not supported yet. Also, the server OS like Windows 2008 are not supported.

3GB RAM and 4GB hard disk space are required for installing Windows Phone SDK for Windows Phone 7.5 development.

Download .ISO image for Windows Phone SDK 7.1

You don't want to use the webinstaller for Windows Phone SDK 7.1, but rather prefer to use an .ISO image to develop apps for your Windows Phone 7.5? Microsoft offers an .ISO image. You can download the .iso image for Windows Phone SDK.

Both .iso image and webinstaller installs the same set of software. If you are not connected to internet 24/7, then you may download the .iso image and then disconnect from the web. The web installer downloads the file as it needs, so it require you to stay connected with the internet during installation.

While Windows Phone 7.5 may be a great product, it appears that Microsoft used some trainees to write the web installer. See the error from web installer:

Windows Phone SDK 7.1 for Windows

An error message from the installer says that my computer does not meet the requirements to run Windows Phone SDK since I have Visual Studio already running. Can't the installer prompt me to close the Visual Studio and let me continue? Unfortunately, the only options are Quit or Print!

Microsoft should send the installer developers for a 1 week crash course on developing user friendly applications.

Once I closed the Visual Studio and restarted the web installer, the installation proceeded without any other issues.

You will be given 2 options on the installer:

1. Install

2. Customize

If you expect the customize option to do a lot like allowing you to choose what components you want to pick and choose, sorry, you will be disappointed. The only customization option available is, you can choose the installation folder.

I am trying to get in to Windows Phone 7.5 app development and will post more updates here soon. Currently I am busy reading the Windows Phone app code samples and also going through Windows Phone Developer Blog. Here is the Windows Phone SDK documentation.
