Vodafone Do Not Disturb registry: how to block unsolicited phone calls in Vodafone cellphones

Do you use a Vodafone mobile phone and get too many unsolicited commercial or telemarketing calls? Is your message inbox flooded with commercial SMS? Learn how to add your phone number to do not call registry and avoid unwanted advertising calls.

Vodafone offers great service and most customers love their mobile phone plans. But just like any other cell phone company in India, Vodafone also offers commercial SMS and telemarketing calls. Tele marketing calls help marketing companies to quickly reach millions of Vodafone subscribers and fetches good revenue for Vodafone. Some people love tele marketing calls and SMS since many deals and discounts are offered through such marketing.

However, it can be annoying and disturbing for people for various reasons:

1. When the phone rings, you may stop your work and run to grab the phone just to find that it is an unsolicited commercial phone call.

2. You may receive too many calls which can be really frustrating.

3. Unwanted calls break your privacy and busy schedule.

4. If you are travelling, commercial calls can cost you lot of money as roaming charges.

How to block commercial phone calls in Vodafone?

In year 2010, TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) introduced a notification that allow telephone subscribers to selectively choose or completely avoid commercial phone calls and messages. All the provisions of this act came in to existence from 27 Sept 2011.

Vodafone respects and follows the regulations in this notification and allows customers to block commercial, tele marketing calls in the Vodafone cellphones.

To block unwanted, unsolicited calls or SMS messages in your Vodafone mobile phones, follow the below steps:

1. To completely stop all commercial messages and tele marketing calls, send the text "START 0" as SMS to the phone number 1909.

0 indicates "block me from all tele marketing calls and SMS".

2. If you like to receive commercial SMS in selective categories (but block all phone calls), you can use the category number (instead of 0) and send an SMS to 1909.

TRAI has defined 7 categories of tele marketing:

1. Banking/Insurance/Financial Products/Credit Cards

2. Real Estate

3. Education

4. Health

5. Consumer goods and automobiles

6. Communication/Broadcasting/Entertainment/IT

7. Tourism

To receive only Real Estate and Tourism related SMS, send the following text to 1909:

START 2,7

You may specify multiple category numbers separated by comma and selectively choose the preferences. As I said earlier, if you 0, it will block all categories.

There is no option to receive telemarketing phone calls on selective categories.
Selective blocking is possible only for SMS messages.

Sending SMS is the easiest way to block unwanted phone calls in your Vodafone. However, if your phone does not support SMS or SMS is expensive or if you simply do not like to use SMS, there is alternative way to add your phone number to the Do not disturb registry.

You can go to Vodafone website and register your details to add your number to the do not call registry.

Both SMS and online registration works pretty much the same way, but when you use the online registration, there are couple of extra steps to confirm you are the real owner of the phone number.
