Google plus app for Android- download, features and review

This article mentions the steps and requirements to install Google plus app on an Android device. Read what features this Google plus app for Android has along with its features and hands-on review

Installation of Google plus on Android

For installing Google plus app on Android smartphone you first of all need an internet connection :) next you need Android 2.1 or higher and of course a Google plus account. You can download the app from www.google.com/mobile/+/. Android and Google plus are the products of a same company-Google, so as expected the app installed without giving any pains. The app integrated quite deeply into a whole lot of features to allow easy sharing. On the first run you are greeted with the options to configure the app.

After complete installation you will see that you have two apps installed. One is Google + and the other is Huddle which we will discuss later in this article. I am trying out this app on HTC Explorer so your experience may vary a little bit depending upon your Android version and manufacturer.

Performance of Google plus app on Android

On HTC explorer the app opens up very fast, in fact the launch takes only under a second and we have in front of us quick access to notifications, your Google + stream, Huddles, Photos, your profile and circles. The UI looked great both in landscape mode and portrait mode. The screen is easy to navigate with no stuffing. By pressing the menu button you can access the terms of service, the privacy policy, help, give feedback, configure alerts and edit the settings. In my HTC phone I go the option of switching of the instant upload of photos (described below). These are all functional apps and nothing much interesting is here to discuss so let's get back to the main screen.

Your most of the time would be spend in Google plus Stream which functions similar to Facebook News Feed with some differences. In your Google plus Stream you will recent activities of people in your Circles. If you swipe right on the screen you will be able to see the activity of people on Google+ who live nearby your location. By this Google has really taken the advantage of its Geographical location based tracking system. After coming to the man screen when you swipe to the left you have the "incoming' Stream. This Stream shows those people who have added you in their Circles but you haven't added them in your Circles.

To see a particular post more clearly (if it has more content) you can click on it as well as you can make comment and/or +1 it.

At the top of the screen you get the most important four buttons- the Google+ button which takes you back to the app home screen, the tick button to check in your nearest location, the camera button to take a new photo and upload directly to Google plus or uploaded a pre-existing photo and finally the Pen button which allows you to post updates similar to Facebook status updates. You can add photos to your posts as well as add your location to the update. You can select the Circles with which you want to share the post with.

Clicking on the Photo button on the homescreen of the app shows all photos associated with your profile including that of your circles, your albums, your phone and even photos of yourself. This is just an amazing feature. The thumbnail of the albums doesn't only show a static image but actually show a slideshow of the photos inside the folder. This has a totally different UI as you would have experience before so better to take some time to get used to it. If Instant upload is enabled then any picture captured by your phone will be instantly uploaded to Google plus however these images will be completely private and you will have to log in to edit its sharing to something other than "private".

By tapping your own profile name your profile opens up. Here you have three important things you will want to see in a short while- few lines from your profile, your latest updates and the latest photos you shared.
The other section is Circles which is used to organize the people you are following according to your preferences. You can create new Circles too. To add new people you can search them by their name or email id.

The last feature to talk about is Huddle which is instant messaging with a single person or all online members of a particular Circle. This can be used for fun purposes like maybe by students in a boring lecture or business professionals in a waste meeting :D

Conclusion

I was honestly very impressed by this app considering that Google added most of the features of the Google plus that we access on computer and can be added for a smartphone. Also I did not find any bug in the working of the app so a recommended app for whosoever may want to use Google plus while on move.
