Kyocera DuraPro - Features, Review, Verdict and Price: Sturdy Looks, Tight in the Jeans!
The Kyocera DuraPro has got muscles and looks, though not much to boast of high-end features as that of the Xperia/iPhone mobile phones. But would you not love a phone which does look good and opens with a crack sound with it's flip? Go on, read my review about the Kyocera DuraPro. I'd not think much before ordering it right away if I have a million dollars in my bank account, well I'm not so sure. Looks are good, definitely.
Well, I'm up here with a yet another phone. This time, it's Kyocera and the phone is called DuraPro. The brand Kyocera seems to be not that popular in India, and hence this phone qualifies for one of those most unknown phones in the market today.Features of Kyocera DuraPro: Do they qualify?
The phone doesn't really have a set of outstanding features, but whatever it has, it just has. Before I speak anything of the features, I have to say that I appreciate the looks a lot. In fact, I should say this is one of those phones I'd love to carry, just because of the looks. It looks robotic, elegant, with a sleek design to take care of your sanity.
The phone was released in the month of February, 2013 which makes it a new candidate and yet, I would call it a not so popular phone because of the manufacturer's reach to the Indian mobile-phones industry.Design of Kyocera DuraPro
Before I talk about the design of this phone, I have to say that while I was searching for this phone on the Internet, I was actually startled to know that a phone with such good looks can be as unpopular as this one actually is. Take my personal opinion, this phone looks stunningly attractive.
Packing it's ribs in a dimension of 4.00 x 2.11 x 1.12 inches (101.5 x 53.5 x 28.5 mm) and weighing aroung 152 grams, this clamshell baby from Kyocera definitely has the looks. I was, to make a note of it, attracted to the vents on the front panel of the phone. To add to the design, the phone is MIL-STD-810 certified. Yes, the Kyocera DuraPro is water resistant and made for rugged use. The kind of surface, basically the face on which the phone rests when kept on a table intelligently, definitely seems to have those treads that make it look strong enough to survive crashes on the ground. This phone seems to be quite comfortable to carry and also a beauty to have one's hands on. Kyocera has been kind enough to its users to provide a holster using which you can simply hand your Kyocera DuraPro around on your belt and walk in pride. It has got all the muscles, and a guaranteed look that can attract the people around. Well it gives you the Bruce Willis' image from the Die Hard series. Display
The Kyocera DuraPro comes with a simple monochromic display of one inches physical size with a resolution of 64 crosss 96 on the front panel (external display). To let you make a note of it, the external display definitely had brilliant contrast and don't need to stress your eyes out there looking for the current time or check if you've got any new messages. The main display is 2 inches in length with a screen resolution of 240x320 pixels. It's a QVGA TFT display, an effort to give you a decent enough screen, though you may not necessarily be transcended while you watch a movie on the phone.Battery Backup
Most people love a clamshell for an extra reason that they don't need to do a lot of things to know what's going on around them. The front display is there which doesn't eat away too much power from the battery. The Kyocera DuraPro has a 1360 mAh, which according to me was sufficient enough to power a phone with basic use. Even the main screen is not too tough to supply power to. So, the Kyocera DuraPro can actually let you have fun with its average 8 hours talktime.Hardware
The Kyocera DuraPro doesn't actually have a hardware backup that can make you go wows on it. It runs on a simple Qualcomm QSC6085 chipset, doesn't have a GPU or something. Well, it doesn't require on in the first place considering the specific skillset it holds. So, that's it. I'm apologetic as I couldn't fetch you much details about the RAM and ROMM of the phone.Camera, Multimedia and Storage Features on Kyocera DuraPro
The Kyocera DuraPro has a simple yet elegant 3.2 megapixel camera which can be put into a generous use of taking stills as well as videos. The video quality is averagely good and I won't say poor. Maybe because I've seen poorer stuff, to speak of. The phone supports media formats like AAC/AAC+/MP3/WMA on the audio and H.263/H.264/MPEG4/WMV on the video end. You've got support for microSD expansion though. The phone had to disappoint me with the presence of a 2.5 mm stereo headphone jack when most people would rather love to carry a high end Sony/Apple/Sennheiser earpiece with a 3.5 mm plug. There is Bluetooth 2.0 version with EDR so you can stream your songs on the wireless. One good thing is that the phone comes bundled with a headset adapter that reduces your first-impression disappointment about the absence of a 3.5 mm audio jack in the phone. The adapter extends 2.5mm to 3.5mm but still, thing is why bother carrying around an extra adaptor just to listen to odd music.
Connectivity and Other Features of Kyocera DuraPro
Talking about the connectivity features of the Kyocera DuraPro, the phone is a CDMA make and features dual-band digital signals. There are additional features to talk of as well. We have on board a programmable hot key which can be assigned to access calendar or Bluetooth or alarm or even the web. It's present on the side of the phone. You have large fonts options available for menus and also, the Kyocera DuraPro is CMAS capable. The phone supports simple SMS and MMS messaging, has POP3 and IMAP accounts, features GPS navigation and helps you integrate your address book with social candies like Gmail and Facebook. The phone has a simple mobile web browser and allows parental controls for calling, texting, web and the camera. So, you see, you can let your kids enjoy your phone, but without necessarily caring to bother if they can see your private messages you do with your girlfriend, which obviously doesn't happen to be the mother of your children. The phone to speak of, supports English and Spanish languages, is TTY capable and has a M4/T4 rating for heading aid capability (HAC). Overall review of the Kyocera DuraPro
Oh, what more do I need to say. After having enlisted all the prominent features of the phone, all I can say is there's not much to boast off about the Kyocera DuraPro but yes, if you're looking for a low budget phone that can stand shocks and falls and you want it to survive the heat and the weather and put into rugged use, maybe this is the right call. So, go for it, then.
Price of Kyocera DuraPro
The price of Kyocera DuraPro in US on Amazon shows off to a minimum of $75, though it comes with varied prices from different sellers at $140, $82 etc. I guess price of Kyocera DuraPro in India would fall to something around 4.5k, if I'm not so sure.
