Samsung has normally been focused on the high end smartphone market with Galaxy S6 and its different variants. Of late, it seems to have understood the importance of the budget and mid-range market which is dominated by Chinese manufacturers. They recently announced a new series Galaxy On with On5 and On7.
In terms of design, it sticks to its regular simpler form factor as has been observed with all its smartphones. The usual Home, Back and Menu buttons sit below the screen. The back panel has a rubberised finish that aids in better grip. The top edge remains clean, while power button is placed at right edge. The design is same as all those Samsung phones out there. The 5.0 inch display is not AMOLED as has been the case with other Samsung devices in high end range. But still, you get a decent 294 ppi pixel density. The HD display on TFT screen looks quite satisfactory. But the screen is prone to fingerprint smudges. Samsung has recently been using its own in- house Exynos processors for its devices. Same goes with Galaxy On 5 as well. The quad core processor is not the faster one, but performs well on a budget phone. Resource hungry games run quite smoothly, thanks to the Mali GPU. The device heats up a bit in cases of continuous play, but not to a level that leaves you worried. Out of 1.5 GB RAM, you get around 500 MB free for your multitasking needs. One major concern with the device is the 8 GB internal memory which is much low by today's standards. However, you can expand it to another 128 GB. There is a 8 MP rear camera with auto focus and LED flash for the camera buffs. The camera performance is comparatively better than the other 8 MP options available in the same price range. The camera app is quite neat and clean. It offers you a multitude of settings and modes as has been the case with most of the Samsung smartphones. You have a 5 MP front snapper that takes a couple of decent selfies. Galaxy On5 packs in a 2600 mAh Li-ion battery. To make the battery last longer, you have two battery saving options - Normal and Ultra. I expect a backup of around six hours with a continuous usage. Though the comparison with other smartphones available at this price range, you may feel it does not offer many of those gimmicky features. But, coming from a renowned brand, it should be one of the better choices for budget smartphone.
Samsung is desperately trying to gain the budget level market share it has lost out to the Chinese manufacturers with this launch along with Galaxy On7. It also has plans to cash in on the 4G craze currently on in India.
