What is Meant by Content Marketing? How does it actually work?

Being a blogger for quite some time now, I am surrounded with this concept of Content Marketing. It is not that, I am totally naive about it. But to be honest, the concept is not very clear in my mind. Wherever I searched for information, I got something like, it is a kind of marketing that is focused on the creation of content and further publishing and distributing it for a targeted set of audience on the net. It is often used by businesses in order to grab people's attention and generate leads of a product or service, expand the customer list, increase online sales and brand awareness and try to form an online community of users, etc.

But all this appears to be simply a vague conceptual text for me. I need to know how it actually works. Who pays whom for what, and then what about the restrictions we face in the top rated sites as well as by Google when we try to post something promotional?

I know it must be a dumb question, especially on a site like this. But then nowhere else I found people to be so responsive, communicative and helpful. And I guess, if I can learn what it is all about, I can create content that can be useful for this site too. So, it would be great, if members here take out some time to explain the concept in a matter of fact manner.

Sorry Pradip, I am still in the same darkness dealing with the same nice-to-hear words which couldn't lead me anywhere.

I will try to explain in easy language about the content marketing.

Content marketing is another way of advertising your product in the media by the help of certain agencies who are expert in projecting as well as communicating about your product in a very intelligent way to the prospective customers. The content marketing agency will charge a fees for that. The purpose of this exercise is to increase the sale of the product.

Many big companies are already using this marketing technique for improving their bottomlines.

This is my understanding of content marketing and if one is interested in its academic definition as available in books or internet then I am reproducing it here and it is something like this -
'Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action'.

Well Umesh, that did clear the cloud a bit, but can you describe still further? I am hearing a lot about backlinks and other stuff. But not able to join the dots.
My other confusion is about promotional writing which is generally discouraged in sites like this. How does the money generate in that case? Can you please explain?

What I could gather and understand is the content writing agency will prepare a attractive and motivating page which may directly or indirectly lead the viewer to the product or the company for which this visual (or audio visual) is prepared.

Now if I am a freelancer or a one man company I can get it done for my work or product also. If I learn content marketing may be I can do it myself.

I can join some such online agency also if I know how to design and carry on the content marketing. They may also remunerate me for my work which they will finally edit and sell to some other company who wants this agency to do it for them.

So the real knitty-gritty and jargons will only be known when we jump in this arena.

At present this is the maximum I can explain from my side. Anyway if I get more clarity in the subject I will be happy to share with you may be sometime later.

Content marketing is sharing valuable information in a great way to attract an audience and to build a brand. Create some unique content around your priority keywords, link it through to some significant landing pages that drives traffic.
