Mi Phones not updating Android Version

I have Mi phone and I have noticed that xiaomi is not at all updating the android version. The version on the device is stuck on the Android Kitkat for 1 year or so. And there is no update on that. Also they are patching actively on the security isssues. They are offering MIUI update. But there seems to be no android update.

At the time of writing all the devices are on Kitkat 4.4.2. And this is something very serious considering it's been 2 years since the last update. I mean we have android N released few weeks back. So we should be technically on Lollipop or Marshmellow at the most.

Have you noticed any other android device maker not updating the OS? What could be a good action in such case, rooting and installing vanilla android or changing the device?

As per the Google policy, the devices older than 18 months from the date of launch are not covered under mandatory software updates. Please check if the Lollipop or Marshmallow were available before the period of 18 months have lapsed.

Moreover, it is the prerogative of the manufacturer whether or not to update their devices to the next iteration of the software. They may come up with several reasons on not being able to do so. Some of the reasons are hardware incompatibility and lack of support.

If you really want to update your phone, you can consider rooting your phone and installing custom ROMs.

None of the Mi phones are on Marshmellow. The most recent one is still on Lollipop. They are blaming hardware manufacturers for this. However some of the older hardwares have vanilla update even to date. So It seems MiUI seems to have restricted them for the older version. I too am thinking that rooting seems to be the only option.
