Why Smartphones have better rear cameras than the front cameras?

Working from a long time on Techulator and mostly dealing with the smartphones, I found that the rear camera is mostly better than the front facing camera. Though some smartphones have the same rear and front camera like the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra . But the front camera is never found to be better than the rear camera by me. I am very curious to know about this fact. Is there any special reason for this, or this is just a way to make smartphones better?

What would you say Techians?

Well, the reasoning behind it is quite obvious. You use rear camera primarily for your landscapes, groups etc. As these images need better and higher focal lengths, you will need better sensors. Front cameras is normally used for video calls and selfies.
Moreover the front camera has a distance limitation as well. You can not use it beyond your arm length. Even this limitation leads to the front camera being less advanced than the rear.

Well, as I was flicking through this forum thread, a funny idea crossed my mind. Though it is not an exact reply or the correct answer to this query, just felt like sharing it with the fellow members.

It has always been a human tendency to be critically clear and interested to see what others are doing. While at the same time you tend to look at your own faults with less clarity! So that's why we need better rear cameras (to check on other people) than the front one!

This can be mostly expected only with the Indian people. Well, that was indeed a funny thinking.

Any object as such has a front and rear. We never really hold up an object with its back toward us do we? So also with a smartphone. It is natural for us to hold up the smartphone with the screen facing towards us and aim the camera towards whatever it is in front of us. Even with a digital camera, we will aim with the lens facing outward so that we can see on the screen what we are aiming at. Thus, a majority of images are always taken with the camera which is at the back of the smartphone. So naturally manufacturers will put more money into developing the technology to improve the rear camera's features and not worry too much about the front camera. Of course, with the selfie craze, there has been some conscious effort to improve the front camera's features as well, with special selfie-focused smartphones not to mention unique apps just for those obsessed about selfies!
