At the Help topic page on Image posting guidelines, it is not clearly mentioned whether or not images should only be in JPEG format though I think this is the rule. I will confirm with the Webmasters if GIF format of images are allowed. Please wait for their response.

We don't have a clear policy on using GIFs. For now, if you have a valid reason to use a GIF, go ahead and use it.
