Forum threads and responses - post wisely and well

The forum is a great platform for swapping views & discussing varied topics. Do use it wisely and well.

    A few Don'ts:
    1. Do not put your name at the end of each forum thread or response or any salutation, quote, design, etc. Use the forum footer at your Dashboard page. If using a quote, put in a short one. Your forum footer should preferably not exceed 3 lines.

    2. Do not needlessly post more than one congratulatory response in threads where winners are announced. You can always edit the first response and add whatever more you wished to say in that response itself rather than putting multiple wishes.

    3. Do not repeat something which has already been informed in a previous response by another member unless you wish to add some additional details.

    4. Avoid a lengthy sentence with lot of punctuation for no reason. At the same time, do not put excessive sentences merely to lengthen the response.

    5. Do not pull up very old threads to respond. If you wish to express an opinion or give your views/suggestions for an old thread, post a new thread and in the text give a link to the old thread as a reference point.

    A few Do's
    1. When submitting a query or complaint about one of your posts, do give the URL of the page for quicker review & feedback.

    2. When submitting a thread, do select the correct category of the forum.

To be brief: Be precise, be concise!

These are a few guidelines that were much in need. I have seen a few members pull up a month old thread just to increase their points. This has happened with one of my threads today and I was about to ask editors to close the thread and found it closed after "that" particular response.
Welcome gesture indeed which will go a long way in improving the look of the forum.

Thanks for these guidelines mam. I would like to know can we give links to other posts in the forum footer? For example, I have an article which could be helpful to the members over here. Can I give a clickable link to that article in the forum footer so that it would appear in every forum response of mine?
    Regards,
    Mehdi

    Mehdi,
We are not allowed to give links to any post, whether URL text or clickable, in our forum footer. It would encourage spam, which we wish to avoid.

    Vandana

OK mam. Thanks for the clarification. I though there would be no problem with linking the internal pages.

On the 5th point of Don'ts, you have mentioned that, do not pull up old forum threads. But I want to know, what is the exact expiry date of a forum thread. Is it 15 days after posting ? Or is it 20 days or more ? Can you please clarify ? I am asking it because many members are not aware of it including me.

  • #20603
    Muddassir,
I would suggest that members do not pull up any thread that is beyond 10 days. Preferably respond only to threads within the last 10 days. As I suggested, if it is a thread beyond that & you missed it and would like to give your views on it, you can start a new thread with a link to that old one as a reference.

    Regards,
    Vandana

In spite of the guidelines above, 3rd and 5th don'ts are not being given any heed to. Old threads are being pulled up repeatedly. That too by old members. Had newbies done this, it would have been a different matter altogether.
And as for the 3rd point among don'ts - some members are found to keep repeating what another member has said in the previous response. This is solely being done to garner more points and try to be among forum super stars. It would be better if the editors/ webmasters think over it and take some action on this - if it is permitted as per site rules.

Thanks Vandana for such a great update. I was not been aware with some of the points which you mentioned above in your thread. Can I use my Forum footer to give a thought in the last of my Forum responses? If yes then please tell me how to do so.

    Aman

    Aman,
We are allowed to put in a one-line quote or thought at the end of a forum post/response using the forum footer. You will find the box to put this in at the forum footer feature at your dashboard page. Do not put any dashes or symbols above or below it though, such as ===== or ^^^^^^ etc. You can, if you wish, put it like this:
    Regards,
    Aman
    [A quote]
    OR
    just the quote

    Regards,
    Vandana

Please tell me Vandana. What to do or write in each box given below in the picture. I just want to write like what you suggested in the above response. Like:-

    Regards,
    Aman

    [A quote].

    Aman

Write what you want to see at the end of your forum post. Like , I have entered, "Live.. and Let Live".

    You can write-
    Aman
"any quote you want to add"

    Timmappa Kamat,
What should I write in the Website URL and Website Title box.

    Regards,
    Aman

I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.

  • #20885
There is no need to write anything in the website URL/title box. You can leave it empty. Even if you write something there, it will not appear in your forum responses.

  • #20886
You need not fill each and every Bix over there. All those options are independent of each other. Since your query is about forum footer, fill in what you want to appear at the end of your forum response. Leave all other viz article footer and other two which I don't remember and then save settings . Done ! Now check your forum threads.
Please note that you need not create any new forum response to check it. Your signature or forum footer will get added to all your existing forum posts.

I have made it correct. Thanks for the reply Timmappa Kamat and Muddassir bro.
