There is no need for any softwares for the good working of home computer. Just keep it out from the dust. It's hardware will survive. Like that do not install tons of softwares which may affect the performance of system. Just keep it simple, it will perform better as long as you want!

As said by Harish keep your system clean and simple. I have a Compaq desktop which I bought some two and a half years ago. It works perfectly fine even I don't use any kind of software and all. Moreover you must perform some work to make your system clear like removing the useless files from Temp and running Disk Defragmenter. From time to time clean it with cloth.
