The PPF account of a relative of mine is maturing next year. What are his options after PPF account maturity in 15 years ? Can he extend it for 15 years again ? Or will he have to close the account, take the maturity and open a new PPF account in SBI ?

  • PPF is Public Provident Fund which is tax saving option under 80 C under an income tax. and it has investment lock-in period of 15 years. You cannot withdraw money, not before the 15 years but you can avail loan after completion of 5 years during this 15 years investment period. The current rate of interest is 7.6%.

Once the 15 years get completed, you can either withdraw the complete amount or you can extend the period of investment by the one year block one after other and maximum of 5 years not greater than that. It is always advisable to continue your money for another 5 years if money need is not so urgent because it is the safest option with compound interest annually.
