I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y510 laptop since 2008, but it has become a very slow device and I want to purchase a new laptop for my Ph.D. study. Please suggest me a good laptop of reputed make which provides me good configuration and specs.

  • I am suggesting you from a personal experience to check out laptops from ASUS in the X series. I myself using ASUS X54 laptop which I bought in 2013 and it is still serving me well. Otherwise, in the budget range, you can get some great laptops which will be perfect for browsing and the research work you plan to do on the laptop. Here are few more suggestions from me out of the ASUS X series:
    HP - 15-BE012TU Laptop
    Screen size:15.6 inchs
    Processor: Core i3 6th Gen
    RAM: 4 GB
    Hard drive: 1 TB
    OS: DOS

    Dell Inspiron - 5567 Notebook
    Processor: Core i3 6th Gen
    RAM: 4 GB
    Hard drive:1 TB
    OS: Ubuntu
    Screen size: 15.6 inches

    Lenovo Ideapad IP 320E Laptop
    Processor: Core i3 6th Gen
    RAM: 4 GB
    Hard drive: 1 TB
    OS: DOS
    Screen size: 15.6 inches

    Dell Inspiron 3467 Laptop
    Processor: Core i3 6th Gen
    RAM: 4 GB
    Hard drive: 1 TB
    Screen size: 14 inches

I personally haven't used processors outside of the Intel family so won't be suggesting those to you either.

  • I would like to give few suggestion before you opt to buy any laptop. People prefer to buy Windows series laptop but I will suggest you to get Linux based laptops. Because first it will reduce your cost by Rs 4-6k atleast. I bought Dell Inspiron Core i3 6th Gen in just Rs 22500. But if you check it's cost in the market, you would get it in around Rs27-30k. I will let you know the process to get it in in so low budget. You must have heard about the Flipkart and Amazon's promotion program which is going on. So if you plan to buy you will get it low cost. You can used Debit/Credit card to get additional benefits. I got Rs 1500 extra off because of HDFC Credit card. You will have to check the card offers on then site itself.

So my recommendation will be to get :

Dell Inspiron Core i3 6th Gen Laptop-
which comes with 1 TB Hard disk and 4 GB DDR4 RAM and 15.6 inch Display.
Operating system will be : Ubuntu 16.04 which is now upgradable to 17.04

As per your saying, I don't think you will be running heavy softwares like Inforamtica on it. So it is the best laptop you will get and you won't find heating problem also.

One con about this laptop is that don't play songs on full sound as it will result in sound card damage.

That's it from my side. Thanks

  • I would suggest you to go for Dell inspiron 3565 if you want to try other processor than intel. This laptop comes with 6 GB of RAM coupled with dual core A9 chip and 1 TB of hard disk. This laptop will perform better on the graphics front.
If you just want to complete your Ph.D study then I don't think you need to spend Rs.30000. Acer Aspire 3, available at around 16000 thousands can handle all our daily task. It comes with 1.1 Ghz dual core processor. This device is loaded with 2 GB of DDR3 RAM and 500 GB of ROM.
Other laptops available in this price range are

    Lenovo Ideapad 110
    Processor : Intel i3 core, 6ht Gen
    RAM : 4 GB DDR3
    HDD : 1 TB
    OS : DOS
    Graphics Card : HD520
    Price : 28500

    HP 14-ar003TU
    Processor : Intel i3, 6th Gen
    RAM : 4 GB DDR4
    HDD : 1 TB
    OS : DOS
    Graphic Card : HD 520
    Prince : 29500

    Acer ES1-572
    Processor : 2.4 Ghz intel i3, 6th Gen
    RAM : 4 GB DDR3
    HDD : 1 TB
    OS : DOS
    Graphics Card : HD 5500
    Price : 27000

    Dell Inspiron 3467
    Processor : 2 Ghz Intel i3, 6th Gen
    RAM : 4GB DDR4
    HDD : 1 TB
    OS : DOS
    Graphics Card : HD 520
    Price : 27000

I hope this list will be helpful.
