  • Core or Xeon for 3D rendering?

Are you keen to know which one among Core or Xeon is better for 3D rendering? Ask our technical experts.

I am building a PC, and I will be doing complex 3D rendering, video editing and heavy multitasking. Sometimes I will leave my PC on for days and even weeks for huge rendering projects. Should I use a Core or Xeon CPU (more specifically, Core i7-6850K or Xeon E5-1650 v4)?

If you need more information about my PC:
    CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4
    Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 64GB DDR4 (F4-2666C15Q-64GVR)
Video Card: Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming
Storage: Samsung 850 PRO Series 1TB SSD

Please help me in choosing one.

  • Here are my views on which is the best for your 3D rendering work.

    1. Core i7-6850K -

    Overclocking

This processor is pricey if we compare it with Xeon. It has clock multiplier unlocked. So you get the idea that the performance is lot improved once overclocked. Though you won't need to overclock if you do 3D word on everyday basis. As doing that would affect your CPU and in turn warranty.

Threads : Number of threads that i7 processor runs equal to that of Xeon.

Operating Frequency : Intel i7-6850K has 3.8ghz which is lower than the Xeon. This is good especially if you choose to use it for the 3D rendering work.

Price : 49,411.43 Rs. Amazon India

    2. Xeon E5-1650 v4

    Overclocking

The processor is clocked higher but in terms of performance it does not have much good option. You may find that for 3D work and games, it does not perform like i7-6850K.

Threads It runs the same number of working threads like i7.

Operating Frequency As the processor runs at higher clocked frequency, it can be that you need more cooling option. Also further overclocking may not be possible for the processor.

Price On amazon the price of the product is 80,760.00 Rs.

Your setup looks good to me for the 3D rendering work. I think you should check Intel i7-6850K model. See other alternative cooling options that you can go for.
