What is the function of an online UPS?

Confused about the functionality of an online UPS? Understand from experts what exactly is an online UPS & its utility and how it differs from a UPS inverter.

What is an online UPS? How is it different from an UPS inverter? I am often confused between a UPS Inverter and an online UPS. Can somebody help me get the knowledge about the technical or mechanical or physical differences between the two?

  • A UPS stands for Uninterrupted Power Supply. An offline UPS or UPS inverter has a switch which changes the supply from mains to battery in the event of mains power failure. An online UPS does not need such a switch as it supplies power always through battery.
Essentially, an online UPS delivers the power to the equipment (or the load as it is called in electrical circles) via the battery using an AC - DC converter no matter whether or not the power source is available or not. The power is drawn from the mains to charge the battery and the equipment keeps on getting power from battery by means of the converter.
In case of an offline UPS or UPS inverter, it supplies the power to the equipment from the mains during the normal power supply is available from mains. The battery is bypassed while supplying the power. The battery keeps charging, but power supply to the equipment is through the mains. The switching mechanism changes to battery in case of power supply failure.

The major differences between online UPS and UPS inverter can be listed as below -

    1. The online UPS does not need a switching mechanism while UPS inverter has a fast switch.

    2. The online UPS lets equipment get cleaner streamlined power supply no matter how erratic the mains power supply may be. UPS inverter has no control over the mains power.

    3. An online UPS needs more electricity than an UPS inverter.

    4. The offline UPS will be cheaper compared to the online as it contains fewer parts.

    5. The online UPS operates at high temperature than the UPS inverter.

  • UPS means Uninterrupted power supply. It has a rectifier circuit, a battery bank and an inverter circuit. The battery bank is connected in parallel to the circuit joining rectifier and inverter. Normally the battery will be charging, when power fails, dc power from battery is inverted to AC and supplied to the load.

Coming to the online UPS, the batteries are always connected to the inverter, so that no power transfer switches are necessary. When power loss occurs, the rectifier simply drops out of the circuit and the batteries keep the power steady and unchanged. When power is restored, the rectifier resumes carrying most of the load and begins charging the batteries, though the charging current may be limited to prevent the high-power rectifier from overheating the batteries and boiling off the electrolyte. The main advantage of an on-line UPS is its ability to provide an "electrical firewall" between the incoming utility power and sensitive electronic equipment.

The basic technology of the online UPS is the same as in a standby or line-interactive UPS

  • Online UPS offers the same feature to that of traditional UPS inverter. Which is offering uninterrupted power supply but with better switching.

The difference between the Online UPS and analog UPS inverter is in the switching mechanism. The online UPS relies on digital functionality to store and maintain the power supply. So in the event of power loss, they quickly resume the supply. The mechanism here is so quick that you won't even feel the power loss for the current equipment you are using. For example, if you are using computers, the screen won't fluctuate to show that difference.

Another difference is the power consumed for the feature offered is low for online UPS. In case of traditional UPS inverter, you consume a lot of power to recharge and to support the switching mechanism. In case of Online UPS the bill is low compared to other inverter.

One more important thing is the amount of usage of battery is more in Online UPS. This ages out the batteries more quickly compared to traditional supply. However the cost wise and the performance wise Online UPS balances out.
