  • Key differences between HTC One M8 and M9

After much hide and seek and a lot of leaks, HTC has finally announced the next flagship HTC One M9.The device is definitely an upgrade on its predecessor. Let's examine the differences based on a few key points.

    Design and Build

The M8 has an all metal Aluminium unibody.  It measures 146.4x70.6x9.4 mm and weighs 160 grams. The device has an ergonomic design. The M9 has the dimensions of 144.6x69.7x9.61 mm and weighs 157 grams. The M9 - thus is lighter , narrower and a bit thicker.

The device has also got a little change in the looks and placement of buttons. M9 now features dual tone all metal unibody design. What I mean by dual tone is that the rear of the device is silver while the edges are gold coated. The volume rockers and microSD Card slot on the right on M8 have undergone a slight change - now power button and volume rockers are on right. Power button used to be on top on M8.

Though M9 looks much similar to M8, there is a scratch resistant coating and sapphire glass lens on rear camera.

    Display

M9 shares the same 5th display on M8. Even the resolution and pixel density stay similar at 1920x1080 full HD. and 441 ppi. HTC has not made any kind of improvement in this department.

    Hardware

M8 was powered by Snapdragon 801 quad core processor with a clock speed at 2.1 GHz. HTC has improved on it by incorporating Snapdragon 810  octacore processor clocking at an astonishing 2.7 GHz.  The M8 has 2 GB RAM while M9 is equipped with 3 GB RAM - a hike of almost 50%. Besides the M8 has DDR3 RAM , while M9 employs DDR4 RAM which is 80% faster. A change has been made to the Graphics unit as well. M8 has Adreno 330 GPU while M9 employs Adreno 430 GPU. It ensures a completely better graphics rendering on M9 than on M8.

    Storage

M8 is available with 16 GB internal memory with an expandable option upto 128 GB. M9 has it a little enhanced to 32 GB expandable upto 128 GB. So must say, an improvement here.

    Camera

M8 had brought the first ever instance of Ultra pixel technology. It has 4 Ultra pixelr rear camera and wide angle lens. It meant better low light performance. But video quality is too poor. M9 has ditched the Duo Camera setup this time and has a 20 MP rear camera with the same dual LED flash as on M8 .It can record 4K videos. It utilises what HTC calls Dynamic Exposure Algorithm which mimics human eye. A new software called One Gallery has been introduced wherein all your images- either from One Drive, Google Drive  or Facebook - are at one place. Hardware and software improvements suggest that M9 camera will be much better than M8's.

Ultra pixel technology- though  left off on rear camera- has been retained for the front camera.

    Software

M8 runs on Android 4.4.2 Kit kat. The Sensei 6 skin provides a lot of customisation options. M9 , however comes with Android Lollipop 5.0.2 with Sensei 7 skin. The Sensei 7 skin has a new app called Themes app which lets you create new themes using your gallery.

    Battery

The battery capacity has been  improved. M8 carries a 2600mAh battery while it has been upped to 2840 mAh on M9. The M9 has talk time of 25.4 hours on 2G and 21.7 hrs on 3G. M8  offers 20 hours talk time on 3G .

    What I would think?

The M9 is definitely an upgrade over M8 . HTC has taken care to improve on the performance of M8. If speed is your requirement, you must  upgrade to M9. HTC should have come up with a better resolution screen. A mere full HD is a bit outdated in present scenario. But since you are interested in the changes in M9 over M8 , I hope Iy have provided a complete list of the key differences.
