  • Why Android versions are named after desserts and in alphabetical order?

Puzzled about desserts being the source of Android OS names? Know the real reason for this unique manner in which Android OS series are named.

As we can clearly see, all the different versions of the Android OS are as per the alphabetical orders and all are related to desserts like CupCake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice-cream Sandwich, Jellybean, Kitkat and now Lollipop. What are the reasons behind this?

  • There is no specific reason as to why Google names its Android versions after desserts. Google itself does not divulge any details into it. It started as the inside joke of the brand. But while releasing Android 4.4 Kitkat, they came up with this explanation -
Android OS powers over 1 million smartphones and tablets. Since these devices make our lives so sweet - each android version is named after a dessert.
The first ever such named version was Cupcake. There are named in a alphabetical order just to take note of the chronological order of the successive updates.
