    What is hibernate feature and how it works?

    Wondering about the hibernate feature and its benefits? Know more about the usefulness and functionality of the hibernate feature.

    I have Windows xp installed on my computer. But its boot speed is very slow. One of my friend asked me to enable Hibernate feature. He said, it will increase boot speed of my computer. So, I enabled hibernate. I was really surprised to see that the boot speed increased tremendously. So my question is that what is hibernate feature and increases boot speed ? Is there any negative affect on my computer's hardware from it ?

  • Hibernation is a mechanism to save energy. It is mainly used in laptops. Hibernation is powering down a PC while retaining its state. Hibernation is very useful for us as it avoid burden or tension to save unsaved data before shutting down. And it also shows us the same programmes on which we were working on after the backup.

  • If you are using a Desktop, Sleep mode will be a better option. Both Sleep & Hibernation mode help in saving energy. However, with Sleep mode, booting is a bit faster. Let's see how.

    When we shut down the PC, it closes all the running programs and operating system. When we start the PC, it starts up afresh from the clean state and runs only those programs that were scheduled to run on start up. We need reopen the files etc, we were working on before the shut-down. This obviously takes time.

    With Sleep Mode, the PC cuts the power from all the modules of PC except from the RAM. That's because the RAM contains all the program data from applications we were running before we had put the PC to sleep. But this means constant power supply is needed for RAM. That's why Sleep mode is good for Desktops, with power from Wall outlets. When we start the PC again, it starts from where we left i.e., all the files and process are saved.

    But with Laptops we do not have the luxury of constant power supply. So, we use Hibernate mode. In this mode, first of all, the data in RAM is written into the hard-disk and then power from all the modules of laptop, including RAM, is cut off and no more power is required. When we start the Laptop, the data is written back from hard-disk to the RAM and laptop starts from where we left.

    Since in Hibernate mode, data needs to be written to and fro from RAM and hard-disk, Hibernate mode is comparatively slower than the Sleep mode.

    However, it should be kept in mind that these modes are better used for saving the power and not as an option to increase boot speed. A proper shut-down/restart will still be required.

    In order to improve start-up, I would suggest to run "msconfig" utility in WINDOWS and deselect the unimportant programs, so that they do not consume time and memory at startup.

  • Proper shutdown is need whenever you install new software, Windows update and update hardware. When you shutdown your PC/laptop, Windows will make sure that all the files are written properly. Files doesn't mean the Word document or notepad you work on. Whenever you turn on your PC Windows run several background process and services. It keeps on write data to your file system. Only when you shut down it realize not to write files to the file system and saves the file properly. So it is recommended to re-boot your system atleast once in a month if you choose for hibernate.

    To speed up startup:
    If you want to speed up the startup process type 'msconfig' in run button. In general tab click on 'Diagnostics startup' radio button. This will load only system drivers and will improve you start up speed.

  • Hibernation is a power saving state that is designed mainly for the laptops. During hibernation, the computer puts all the open programs into the hard disk and turns off. When we again open the computer the find all the open tasks open. The hibernate feature has no demerits as its pre-installed in the system by Microsoft Windows.

    People sometimes get confused between sleep and hibernation. Sleep and Hibernation are two different process . In sleep mode, machine state is saved into RAM and uses minimum power. Sleep mode is preferred when we have not to use the system for a short period of time but hibernation is used when we have to not to use the device for a long period of time.
