Nokia Lumia 530 or Redmi. Which one is better?

Not sure whether to buy the Nokia Lumia 530 smartphone or the Xiaomi Redmi? The responses below will help you make the right choice between Nokia Lumia 530 vs Xiaomi Redmi

I am planning to buy my first smartphone in coming days and my budget is around 6k. I am confused between Nokia Lumia 530 & Xiaomi Redmi. My main priorities are heavy internet browsing, using all products of Google like Gmail,Gtalk, Google Docs etc. Camera, gaming is not of much importance to me, though it will be good to have them. I would be glad if someone tells me the detailed comparison and suggests which is better among the two for me.

  • If you need to make a choice between these two devices, my suggestion would be to go for the Redmi 1S. Looking at your usage, I think the Redmi would suit you better.

Please note Nokia 530 would not let you use some of the Google apps like Google Maps as Nokia uses their own maps for navigation. Also, since it is a Windows based phone, you would not have access to the Google Play store and would be limited to whatever little apps that are available with Nokia/Microsoft App store.

The Redmi 1S although not easily accessible, wins in these departments. Also, some of the nifty features that Xiaomi devices offer are not available in any of the other costlier smartphones as well. Have a look at the "Top 5 unknown features of Xiaomi devices" here or watch this video:

  • Internet browsing experience is good in both Redmi and Lumia 530. Both device has their own values which I will relate below.

    Video streaming:
When it comes to watching online videos I prefer Lumia 530. Whenever you play a video in Lumia 530 it changes to full screen mode. In Android device it plays directly in the embedded layout. The worst part in Android is that it won't support flash player. So you cannot stream flash videos in Redmi whereas it is possible in Lumia. Keep in mind not much videos in online are based on flash. However in Android you can do some tricks to make the flash videos to play.

For playing offline video Redmi is the best. You can play .avi, .xvid extension videos in Redmi whereas you cannot play them Windows Phone. Even there is no third party apps in Lumia to play those extensions. Also Redmi has the advantage of big screen.

    Social network:
I am sure you will be using WhatsApp if you get a smartphone. WhatsApp is app like GTalk used for chatting. WhatsApp for Android (Redmi) is error free when compared to WhatsApp for Windows (Lumia). I have encountered random crashes in Lumia 530 while using WhatsApp. WhatsApp notification is not much fast as Android.

Above situation applies to all social networking apps.

    Office apps
Lumia 530 is obvious performer when comes to office apps. Office apps are nothing but Word, Excel, PPT which you get by default in Lumia. In Redmi you have option to download those apps for free. So you can do these tasks equally good in both phones.

Lumia 530 comes with offline maps. You should do a one time download and after that you can use it with internet connection. It will show your location even when you are offline. It is great advantage and it saved me many times during my travel to new city/state. The user interface is very clean and you can understand easily when compared to Google maps.

In Redmi you will have Google maps which you need internet connection to use it. When on internet it will even show which direction you are facing.

If you have internet you can even use Google maps in Lumia 530. I feel Lumia is winner when it comes to map service.

You can get games in both Redmi and Lumia. If you see the count obviously Android have more games than Windows. But the fact is you will be installing maximum 5 to 10 games in your phone. So my point is you will get games for Lumia 530 too. You don't need to worry about games unless you are serious gamer.

If you compare the spec sheet you will find Redmi has promising hardware. What I feel is Lumia has optimized software. Best example is I can install Asphalt 8 game in Lumia eventhough it has 512 MB RAM. This Ashphalt 8 game need 1 GB RAM if you are running in Android. But you have the advantage of front facing camera, flash and big screen in Redmi.

Decision is up to you. Choose the phone which you feel that suits you. You have shortlisted best in the market, so neither of them will disappoint you.

  • Xiaomi Redmi 1S is an excellent phone within your price range and currently no other device can can be compared with it. In my opinion you should go for a Redmi 1S as it is completely value for money.
