Of course, you can use WeChat messenger app to create personal profiles. You will be able to build a networks of friends using this new messenger from China's Tencent company. You can even share photos, videos and music with the new messaging service. However, the question as raised by you is that whether this new messaging service will in anyway affect or threat the services of established social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter.
Facebook has a very solid base with over 1 billion users. By far it is the world's most popular website. The Facebook has been keeping itself adapted to the changing situations in the tech world. After the entry of smartphones, it has stepped up its focus on mobile world. It has also become the most used smartphone app. However, there are feelers which say that the messaging apps like WeChat, which has combined both the services of messaging and social networking are going to become a threat to the dominance of Facebook in the near future. Moreover, these messaging services are continuously progressing and might even start full-fledged platforms where they can even support third part applications like games.
For the time-being, of course, there is no such threat because the users of the new messaging apps are keeping their loyalty to Facebook as well. So, there is no immediate sign of the social networking giant losing its grip on the market. As far as Twitter is concerned, its nature of business is entirely different than WeChat. As such, there will not be much effect of WeChat on Twitter.
