In this article, I am going to highlight the steps required to add an unread folder in outlook 2010. Please read the below article in detail to know more about what unread folder is and its importance in Outlook.

Introduction

Unread folder in an outlook serves as a folder which keeps all the email items which have not been read by the user. It's important to have this folder in outlook to keep a track of the important emails requiring more attention and time to read and respond.

Most users do not add this folder in their outlook. This folder is present in outlook however requires a manual mapping. This serves to be helpful for the users of high profile who get emails in bulk everyday to read and respond.

This scenario is not common however, if a user feels a need to add this folder, the steps to add it can't be found so easily. I have tried to outline the steps in outlook 2010 and 2007 versions. In outlook 2003, this folder will be present by default in outlook and does not require any manual mapping.

The need of adding this folder arises when we often happen to forget reading important mails in inbox. This folder serves as a reminder to check and respond if required to unread emails.

Please see the below simple and easy steps to add it.

Outlook 2010

Step 1 - Open Outlook

Step 2 - Right click on Search Folder

Step 3 - Click on New folder.

Step 4 - Select Unread Mails

Step 5 - Click OK

Step 6 - It will create Unread Folder in Search Folder

Step - Now Drag and Drop Unread folder to 'favorite folders' or Right Click on Unread Mails option and Select Show in Favorites.

Outlook 2007

Step 1 – Open Outlook

Step 2 - Right click on Search Folder

Step 3 – You would find Unread Folder I the list of the folders

Step 4 - Click OK

You would find a new folder called "Unread Folder" in your outlook and it will automatically get updated with all the unread emails.
