Introduction


Nokia is one of the oldest communication and information technology corporations of Finland. The main products of this company are mobile phones and other portable devices relating to information technology. It is a very large corporation with over one lakh employees and its offices are spread across 120 countries of globe. The sales network of Nokia covers around 150 countries. From 1998 onwards, Nokia had occupied the first position as a vendor of mobile phones in the world. However, the entry of the Korean giant Samsung making android based smartphones and Apple with its iPhones hit its sales. Presently Nokia is the world's second largest mobile manufacturer after Samsung. Nokia entered a strategic partnership with Microsoft in February 2011 for manufacture of smartphones using Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system. This has redeemed the lost image of Nokia to some extent. Nokia has brought out the Lumia series of its Windows phone 8 OS based smartphones. We shall be discussing six Nokia mobile phones released in 2013, three of which run on Windows phone 8 operating system.
Nokia 301

The candybar designed Nokia 301 was released in the Indian phone market in April 2013. Nokia has tried to give it a look of a Lumia series of its smartphones. The entry level smartphone is priced at Rs 5,490 at Maniacstore.com and at Rs 5,500 at Naaptol.com. The focus of this basic smartphone is on its strong camera performance in this segment. It has a physical numerical keypad. Nokia 301 supports 2G GSM and 3G HSDPA networks. There is an option of Nokia 301 in dual SIM. The dimensions of this smartphone are 114.0 x 50.0 x 12.5 mm and its weight is 102 g.

Nokia 301 comes with a display of 2.4 inches supported by TFT display with 256K colours. The screen resolution is 240 x 320 pixels with pixel density of 167 ppi. The smartphone gets vibration, MP3 ringtone alerts. It has a loudspeaker and 3.5 mm audio jack. The internal memory is merely 256 MP Rom, so the users need to buy a microSD card to expand memory up to 32 GB. The RAM in this smartphone is of 64 MB.

The internet and data connectivity is through 3G, GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, EDR and microUSB. There is no Wi-Fi facility. The primary camera at the rear is of 3.15 MP. There is no secondary camera. The camera has features like self-timer, panorama and ability to take sequential shots. The image resolution can be up to 2048 x 1536 pixels. The shots taken by camera can be shared over social networking sites. The video recording capability is QVGA @30fps.

The battery support is by 1110 mAh battery. The talk time is up to 20 hours (2G) and up to 6 hours (3G). The standby time is up to 888 hours (2G) and up to 936 hours (3G). The messaging is through SMS, MMS, Email and IM. There is a stereo FM radio and games for entertainment. The phone is available in Cyan, Black, Yellow, Magenta and White.
Nokia Asha 310

Nokia commenced manufacturing its Nokia Asha series towards the end of 2011 and released three Asha series Asha 200, Asha 300 and Asha 303 in November and December 2011. Nokia released 10 more Asha series mobile phones in 2012. The latest in the Asha Series is Nokia Asha 310. Nokia Asha 310 is the 14th Asha series mobile phone from Nokia and the first to be released in 2013.

Nokia Asha 310 costing around Rs.5852 supports only 2G GSM network. It is dual SIM smartphone with dimensions 109.9 x 54.0 x 13.0 mm and weight of 103.7 g. The display size is 3.0 inches and the display type is TFT capacitive multi touch screen with 65K colours. The display panel is protected by a scratch resistant glass. The screen resolution of this entry level smartphone is 240 x 400 pixels with pixel density of 155 ppi.

Nokia Asha 310 supports vibration, polyphonic, WAV and MP3 ringtone alerts. The smartphone has a loudspeaker and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The internal memory is merely 20 MB with 128 MB Rom. But the users can expand memory up to 32 GB via microSD card support. Nokia Asha 310 has 64 MB RAM.

The internet and data transfer connectivity features are through GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP and microUSB. There is a 2 MP camera at rear of the phone. There is no secondary camera. The image resolution of camera is up to 1600 x 1200 pixels. It can record videos at 176p @10 fps.

Nokia Asha 310 is equipped with a 1110 mAh battery. The talk time is up to 17 hours and standby time is up to 1600 hours and the users can play music up to 54 hours. Its phonebook can contain up to 1000 contacts. Accelerometer is the only sensor supported by this smartphone. There is an FM radio with RDS and recording (only in select markets). Games are available for entertainment. Nokia Asha 310 is available in black, white and golden light colours.
Nokia Lumia 520

Nokia brought out the Lumia series of Windows 8 phones after tying up with Microsoft in 2011 for its Window phone 8 operating system. Nokia started manufacturing Windows phones in the end of 2011 and brought out 2 Nokia Lumia phones 800 and 710 in November 2011 and December 2011 respectively. Nokia Lumia series continued to make its progress and Nokia released about 9 Nokia Lumia Windows phones in 2012. Nokia continued its release of Windows 8 phones in 2013 with the release of Nokia Lumia 520, 620 and 720. Nokia also announced one more Nokia Lumia 505 in 2013, but I have not included this phone for discussion since it is not still available with the Indian mobile phone retailers and its price is not available officially.

Nokia Lumia 520 released in April 2013 supports both 2G GSM and 3G HSDPA networks. It is a single micro-SIM windows 8 phone and is priced around Rs 10,499. The smartphone's dimensions are 119.9 x 64.0 x 9.9 mm and it weighs 124 g. The display size is 4.0 inches and the display type is IPS LCD capacitive multi touch screen with 16M colours. The display panel is protected by a scratch resistant glass. The screen resolution is 480 x 800 pixels with pixel density of 233 ppi.

Nokia Lumia 520 supports Vibration, WAV, MP3 ringtone alerts. It has a loudspeaker and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The internal memory of Nokia Lumia is 8 GB. It can be expanded up to 64 GB via microSD card. The RAM is 512 MB.

The internet and data connectivity support for Nokia Lumia 520 is through 3G, GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual band, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP and microUSB. There is only a single 5 MP camera at the rear of the phone with image resolution up to 2592 x 1936 pixels. The camera has features like Autofocus and geo-tagging. It can record videos at 720p @30fps.

Nokia Lumia 520 is powered by a 1.0 dual core Qualcomm MSM8227 supported processor with Adreno 305 GPU. The sensors available in this smartphone are accelerometer and proximity. It is a GPS enabled A-GPS with GLONASS smartphone. There is no Java support and no radio.

Nokia Lumia is equipped with Li-Po 1430 mAh battery. The talk time is up to 14 hours 40 minutes (2G) and up to 9 hours 40 minutes (3G). The standby time is up to 360 hours (3G). It can support music play up to 61 hours. Nokia Lumia 520 is available in yellow, red, cyan, white and black colours.

Nokia Lumia 620 was released in the Indian phone market in January 2013. It is priced around Rs 14,230 at several online sellers. Nokia Lumia 620 supports 2G GSM and 3G HSDPA networks. It is single micro-SIM phone. The body of this smartphone admeasures 115.4 x 61.1 x 11.0 mm and its weight is 127 g.

The display size of Nokia Lumia 620 is 3.8 inches. Its display type is TFT capacitive multi touch ClearBlack display with 16M colours. The screen resolution of this phone is 480 x 800 pixels with pixel density of 246 ppi. The smartphone can support vibration, WAV and MP3 ringtone alerts. It has a loudspeaker and a 3.5 mm audio jack. There is Dolby sound enhancement for headphones.

The internal memory support for Nokia Lumia 620 is 8 GB. This memory is expandable up to 64 GB via microSD card. The RAM support is of 512 MB.

Nokia Lumia 620 runs on Window Phone 8 operating system. It is powered by 1.0 GHz Krait processor supported by Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset and Adreno 305 GPU. The sensors supported by this smartphone are accelerometer, proximity and compass. The smartphone has A-GPS support and GLONASS. There is no Java support and no radio. The phone is available in lime green, orange, magenta, yellow, cyan, white and black colours.

Nokia Lumia 620 is equipped with Li-Ion 1300 mAh battery. It has a talk time of 14 h 40 min (2G) and 9h 50 min (3G). The standby time is up to 330 h and music can be played up to 61 hours.
Nokia Lumia 720

Nokia Lumia 720 has been released in the Indian market in April 2013. It is presently priced around Rs 18,999. It is the costliest of the Lumia series Windows phone released in 2013. The smartphone supports both 2G GSM and 3G HSDPA networks. It is a single SIM smartphone using micro-SIM. The dimensions of Nokia Lumia 720 are 127.9 x 67.5 x 9.0 mm with weight of 128 g. It is the slimmest of the three Nokia Lumia series phones released in 2013.

Nokia Lumia 720 display is of 4.3 inches. The display type used in this smartphone is IPS LCD capacitive multi touch ClearBlack display with 16M colours. There is a Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protection for the screen. The screen resolution of this phone is 480 x 800 pixels with a pixel density of 217 ppi.

Nokia Lumia 720 has sound features like vibration, WAV and MP3 ringtone alerts, a loudspeaker, and a 3.5 mm jack. There is Dolby sound enhancement for headphones. The internal memory of this smartphone is 8 GB. This memory can be expanded up to 64 GB by using a microSD card. It has 512 MB RAM.

The internet and data transfer connectivity for Nokia Lumia 720 is through 3G, GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual band, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP, NFC and microUSB. The primary camera at the rear is of 6.1 MP. It can shoot images up to 2848 x 2144 pixels size. The other features of this camera are Cart Zeiss Optics, Autofocus, LED flash and geo-tagging. The camera can record videos at 720p @30fps. There is also a front facing 1.3 MP secondary camera with video recording facility at 720p @30fps.

Nokia Lumia 720 runs on Window phone 8 operating system. The smartphone is powered by 1.0 GHz processor with support of Qualcomm MSM8227 chipset and Adreno 305 GPU. It has sensors like accelerometer, proximity and compass. There is A-GPS support and GLONASS. It has no Java support and no radio. The smartphone is available in white, red, yellow, cyan and black colours.

The battery support for Nokia Lumia 720 is through non-removable Li-Ion 2000 mAh battery with a talk time of 23 hours 20 minutes (2G) and 13 hours 20 minutes (3G). The standby time is up to 520 hours (3G). The music play time is up to 79 hours.
Nokia 105

Along with the costly Nokia Lumia Windows 8 phones and Nokia Asha low cost smartphone, Nokia also released a basic mobile phone Nokia 105 in the Indian market in April 2013. The basic phone is priced Rs 1,249 and is targeted at the low income group of users.

Nokia 105 supports only 2G GSM network. It can use only single mini – SIM. The dimensions of this basic entry level mobile phone are 107.0 x 44.8 x 14.3 mm. It is a very light weight phone weighing merely 70 g.

The display size of Nokia 105 is 1.45 inches and it supports TFT screen with 65K colours. The screen resolution is poor 128 x 128 pixels with pixel density of 125 ppi. You cannot expect more from this low cost phone.

Nokia 105 supports vibration and polyphonic ringtone alerts. It has a loudspeaker and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The phonebook can accommodate up to 500 contacts with call records. The internal memory support for Nokia 105 is 8 MB. There is no microSD card slot to expand the memory externally. Nokia 105 has 384 KB RAM support.

There is no internet or data transfer connectivity with this basic phone. The USB port of this phone is meant for charging the phone only. There is no camera provided in Nokia 105. Of course, you can entertain yourself with FM radio and certain games provided in this phone. There is a messaging facility through SMS. There is no GPS or Java support. Nokia 105 is available in black and cyan colours. The normal features like digital clock, calculator, calendar, converter and expense manager are provided.

Nokia 105 is equipped with Li-Ion 800 mAh battery. It has a talk time of up to 12 hours 30 minutes. The standby time is up to 840 hours.
