GOOGLE ASUS NEXUS 7 vs <BR>SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB 2

Introduction

There were several launches of smartphones and tablets last year. The trend continued this year too. Some of the devices which are released first in several countries of Europe, America and Asia take time to get released in our country. In the last week of March 2013, Google launched Google Asus Nexus 7 tablet in India at a price of Rs 15,999. You also get Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 P3100 at about the same price. So, as a buyer, you get confused whether to buy Google Asus Nexus 7 tablet or Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. In such cases, there is a need to compare the detailed features and specifications of the two devices to arrive at the correct decision by the buyer.

Comparison of Google Asus Nexus 7 tablet and Samsung Galaxy Tab 2

Let us discuss the detailed comparison of features and specifications of the two tablets in question by taking one feature at a time:

Body built of two tablets

1. GOOGLE ASUS NEXUS 7 TABLET VS SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB 2 P3100
The dimensions of Google Asus Nexus 7 are 198.5 x 120 x 10.45 mm with regard to its height, width and thickness. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is 193.7 x 122.4 x 10.5 mm in height, width and thickness. This reveals that there is hardly any significant difference in their dimensions. The weight of Google Nexus 7 is 340 g. It is only slightly lighter by 345 g weight of Samsung Galaxy Note Tab 2.

Display size and type, screen resolution and pixel density

Both the tablets from Google and Samsung have the same 7 inch display size. The display type in Google Asus Nexus 7 tablet is LED-backlit IPS LCD multi touch screen with 16M colours while it is PLS LCD capacitive multi touch screen. So, here too, there is nothing much to compare. The Nexus 7 has a better screen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels than the screen resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels of Galaxy Tab 2. Google Nexus 7 also is the winner with better pixel density of 216 ppi when compared to mere 170 ppi of Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. It is obvious that Nexus 7 will give you better clarity of pictures than Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 due to these features.

Connectivity features of the two tablets

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 has a lot more connectivity features than Google Nexus 7. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is supported by connectivity features like 2G, 3G, GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports. It also supports cellular connectivity and has standard SIM slot. On the other hand, Google Asus Nexus 7 tablet is entirely dependent on Wi-Fi for internet connectivity. However, it also has a Bluetooth. But Google Nexus is not supported by SIM. As such, there is no 2G, 3G, GPRS or EDGE internet connectivity. Although Google Nexus tablet supports NFC (Near Field Communication) but it does not add much to its advantage in India where this technology has still to be adopted by business. I may like to add that those interested in having internet connectivity with their Google tablet, must buy Google Asus Nexus 7 cellular with 2G and 3G connectivity which costs more but is not the subject of our comparison in this article.

Cameras compared in both the tablets

Comparing the cameras of the two tablets, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is ahead of Google Nexus 7. The former has a 3.15 MP primary camera at the rear with features like geo-tagging and face detection. Galaxy Tab 2 also has 0.3 MP VGA front facing secondary camera for video calling. In comparison with Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, Google Nexus 7 tablet is equipped with a single camera of 1.2 MP camera which can also be used for video calling. The cameras of both the tablets can record videos at 720p @ 30fps.

Onboard storage & expandable memory

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is in an advantageous position with regard to its internal storage options of 8/16/32 GB. It has also the provision of a microSD card slot enabling it to expand the memory up to 32 GB externally. On the other hand the memory of Google Asus Nexus 7 is limited to internal storage options of 16 GB and 32 GB. The user available memory is only 13 – 14 GB in 16 GB version. There is no microSD card slot to expand the memory externally.

Operating system

Google Asus Nexus 7 tablet is the Google's own device. So, it is obvious that it has the advantage of using Google's Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) OS with easy upgradation to its latest version of Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). The users of Samsung Galaxy Tab to have to be satisfied with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) which can be upgraded to 4.1 (Jelly Bean) at the most. Google Asus Nexus 7 will also have the advantage of the future updates of Android operating system provided that its hardware is eligible for that. This advantage might not be available to Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

Processor

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 P3100 is empowered by a Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 1.0 GHz dual core processor. Of course, this processor is supported by a slightly low graphics processor PowerVR SGX540. It has the support of 1 GB RAM. The speed of the processor combined with 1 GB RAM is good for gaming and multi-tasking. However, this power is not enough for rendering of HD video. This low power sometimes makes Galaxy Tab 2 to stumble as the HD video demands more of power and volatile memory.

In comparison with the above features of Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, Google Asus Nexus 7 tablet is powered by a more powerful Nvidia Tegra 3 supported Cortex A9 1.2 GHz quad core processor which pushes the Google tablet much ahead of Samsung tablet. This processor is also supported by 1 GB RAM and a better GPU ULP GeForce. So, Nexus 7 supports an excellent game performance with a very good visual display. The graphics processor used by Nexus 7 tablet also has a very responsive user interface. Moreover, games like Conduit HD and Dead Trigger are especially made for Tegra 3 chip used with the processor of Nexus 7. As such, Google Asus Nexus 7 is the clear winner over Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 in this segment.

Battery support in the two tablets

Google Asus Nexus 7 is equipped with 4325 mAh battery. This battery gives it a talk time of up to 10 hours. However it may depend on certain other factors as well. Compared to this, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 draws its talk time power from 4000 mAh and said to last for over a day with normal use.

Price and availability

The price of Google Asus Nexus 7 tablet with 16 GB storage is Rs 15,999 at www.grabmore.in. The 32 GB storage version sells at Rs 19,998 at the same online shop. However, the price of Google Ausu Nexus 7 Cellular with 2G and 3G connectivity with 32 GB internal storage is Rs 22,199. These are all discounted prices at the online seller. The delivery is little more since the device has to be shipped from the U.S. The lowest prices and availability of Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 with 16 GB onboard storage are Rs 14,949 at shopclues.com, Rs 15,049 at snapdeal.com, Rs 15,190 at surf2buy.com and Rs 15,218 at mirchimart.com. The prices given here are those which were found at the time of writing this article.

Conclusion

Google Asus Nexus 7 is an excellent tablet in terms of performance especially when we compare its quad core processor and a powerful graphics processor with that of the dual core CPU and low performer graphics processor of Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. The former also has a better display than the later. Perhaps the lack of features like rear camera, more storage and SIM calling can be overshadowed by the good performance features of Google Nexus 7. But we cannot completely overlook their value to the users which Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 provides. So, we can conclude that the final judgment rests with the buyer since it is he or she who knows his or her preferences better. However, those interested in having a Google Asus Nexus 7 tablet with SIM calling and 2G and 3G internet connectivity, can better opt to buy Google Asus Nexus 7 Cellular tablet which priced a few thousands rupees higher than Google Asus Nexus 7 tablet.
