Nokia Lumia 920
The much awaited Lumia 920 is finally launched in India. It was officially announced way back in September last year. Let us take a look at the features of this phone.
Operating System & applications- Nokia Lumia 920 runs on the Windows Phone 8 OS. Like other Lumia smartphones, Lumia 920 comes with Nokia-exclusive apps. One thing I loved about this smartphone is the wide range of utility apps it has. If you are a frequent traveler, Lumia 920 has some exciting apps for you. It has Nokia Maps, Nokia Transport and Nokia Drive 3 applications for navigation. If you use pre-installed maps, you won't need an internet connection for Nokia Drive 3 which is a voice guided application. Nokia City Lens is another traveler-friendly software that uses camera and tells details about user's surroundings. Lumia 920 also includes Nokia Music which allows you to stream unlimited songs for free. Nokia has made all efforts to impress buyers. Last year, Nokia acquired Scalado and integrated its technology in the new Nokia Smart Shoot app. This app will take a number of photos in quick succession and then capture the best parts of them, thus giving you the best possible picture.

Power & performance- Lumia 920 is powered by a Dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor and Qualcomm Adreno 205 GPU. I would say that most of its functions are smooth except the long loading time during download of some applications.
Screen display & aspect ratio- Lumia 920 has a 4.5 inch capacitive touch screen with 1280x768 TFT LCD display. The display is good for reading e-books or surfing internet. It comes with an aspect ratio of 15:9 (means wide screen display) using enhanced IPS screen technology commonly called 'PureMotion HD+'. It delivers wide viewing angles for watching media. The aspect ratio of 15:9 is close to the standard 16:9 in similar devices. The conventional IPS LCDs have 23 ms average transition times but in Lumia, this number goes down to less than 9 ms. This means there is very less motion blur and high clarity in Lumia 920. The screen also has an adaptive system for adjusting color, contrast and brightness.
Body & design- The stylish body of Lumia 920 has a 4.5 inch touchscreen stretched across most of its fascia. The curved display is covered by Gorilla glass. With 130.3x70.8x10.7mm dimensions and weight of 185 g, Lumia 920 is one of the bulkiest high-end handsets in the market. The phone is also quite thick in comparison to other smartphones. The poly carbonate body of Lumia 920 offers a matte finishing to it. It is available in matte black, matte cyan, matte gray, glossy yellow, glossy red and glossy white colors.
Camera- The 8.7 megapixel rear camera of Lumia 920 uses PureView technology. The f/2 Carl Zeiss Tessar lens is the one that sports Pure View and comes with a high power dual LED flash on its side. The BSI image sensor used is much smaller than the one used in Nokia 808 but the images are fantastic. I could take clear indoor pictures and even when the color or the exposure were low, the picture quality was commendable. There is a dedicated camera shutter button but even a tap on the screen will do. The lens focuses on the object and the flash lights up the frame automatically before you make a click. There is also a front camera. While the rear camera captures HD videos at 1080p, the front camera captures the same at 720p.
Memory- Lumia 920 has 1GB RAM. It has 32 GB internal storage. Though Windows Phone 8 supports storage expansion, Lumia 920 has no microSD card slots and hence storage can't be expanded.
Connectivity- Like its predecessors, Lumia 920 supports 4G spectrum and NFC. Other features include USB v2.0, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Wi-Fi hotspot.
Battery & inductive charging- Lumia 920 has a 2000 mAh battery which can easily last up to 400 hours in standby mode. It gives 10 hours of 3G talk-time. You can easily make at least 15 phone calls, listen to music and spend good time on Facebook. You can charge the battery physically or you can charge it inductively (Qi technology) by placing it onto a charging pad.
The software is a bit different than other android or iOS-based smartphones. When you try to delete a typed word, the cursor will not place at the text for editing. You will have to double tap to direct the cursor. One more difference I noted is that when you tap on a contact, instead of calling directly, the software asks you to choose between messaging and calling the selected contact.
Price- Rs. 38199
Nokia Lumia 820
You can call Lumia 820 as a cheaper version of Lumia 920. The look, the features are very similar to Lumia 920. The major difference lies only in price. Let us take a look at the features first.
Operating System & applications- Like Lumia 920, Nokia Lumia 820 also runs on the Windows Phone 8 OS. These are one of the first Nokia phones to have Windows Phone 8 OS. The pre-loaded Nokia-exclusive apps include Nokia Maps, Nokia Transport, Nokia Drive 3, Nokia City Lens, Nokia Music and Nokia Smart Shoot. These applications are available only on Nokia handsets and not on other Windows Phone 8 devices. For more apps, visit the Microsoft Marketplace.
Power & performance- Like Lumia 920, Nokia Lumia 820 is also powered by a Dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor. The GPU is Adreno 225. Lumia 820 is equally fast as Lumia 920.

Lumia 820 is available in black, gray, red, yellow, white, blue and violet colors.
Camera- Like Lumia 920, the 8 megapixel rear camera of Lumia 820 comes with f/2 Carl Zeiss Tessar lens, high power dual LED flash and autofocus. The picture quality is decent. In fact, I wasn't expecting such clear sharp images from an 8 megapixel camera. Comparing with other phones like HTC Windows Phone 8X which has an 8 megapixel camera, I would always prefer Lumia 820 for taking images. You have an option to enhance the camera by downloading additional lenses. Other features include Panorama view, Cinemagraph for animating images and Smart Shoot for editing. The camera captures HD videos at 1080p.
Memory- Lumia 820 has 1GB RAM like Lumia 920. The internal storage capacity is 8 GB. The good thing is that unlike Lumia 920, Lumia 820 has microSD card slot. It is the first smartphone with Windows Phone 8 OS that comes with a microSD card slot. The storage can be expanded by up to 64 GB.
Connectivity- Connectivity features of Lumia 820 include USB v2.0 and LTE.
Battery & inductive charging- Lumia 820 has a 1650 mAh Li-Ion which gives a talk-time of up to 14 hours on 2 G networks and 8 hours on 3 G networks. The standby time is up to 330 hours on 2 G networks and the same on 3 G networks. The battery is no match to the 2000 mAh battery of Lumia 920 but you can easily manage a day even if the mobile usage is high. You can charge the battery physically or wireless by placing it onto the Nokia's charging plate.
Price- Rs. 27559 (Rs. 10640 less than Lumia 920)
Nokia Asha 310
Nokia Asha 310 is a dual SIM smartphone. You can use a simple technique called 'Nokia's Easy Swap' to swap SIM cards without switching off the phone. You can expect it to be a low price phone as the features are pretty ordinary. It is an upgraded version of Nokia 109. Let's take a look at the features.
Operating System & applications- Nokia Asha 310 runs on Series 40 Asha Touch platform. It has very basic in-built applications like dictionary, calculator, converter, world clock, to-do list, reminder, alarm clock, calendar, recorder and organizer. The social apps on phone include Facebook chat, Nokia chat, Twitter, eBuddy and YouTube.
Screen display - Nokia Asha 310 has a small 7.62 cm LCD Transmissive display with 65K colors and a resolution of 240x400 pixels. Like other smartphones, the screen of Nokia Asha 310 is a capacitive touchscreen.
Body & design- With 109.9x54x13mm dimensions and weight of 104 g, Nokia Asha 310 is a lightweight handset. The phone is also quite thick in comparison to other smartphones. It is available in black, white, matte gray and golden colors.
Camera- The 2 megapixel camera of Nokia Asha 310 has a resolution of 1600x1200 pixels. It can record videos of 176x144 pixels resolution at 10fps. The camera has no flash. The features are less but then the price is also less.

Nokia Lumia 720
Nokia Lumia 720 was announced this year in the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona along with Nokia Lumia 520. It will be released very soon in India. Let us take a look at its features.
Operating System & applications- Like other Lumia phones, Nokia Lumia 720 runs on Windows Phone 8 OS and comes with Nokia-exclusive apps. It has the Kids Corner app which allows your child to play on the phone making sure that no data is wiped or messages, e-mails, etc. sent to contacts. Other apps include Family Room, Wallet, Xbox-Live Hub, OneNote and common social networking apps.
Power & performance- Lumia 720 is powered by a Dual-core 1.0GHz Snapdragon S4 processor to give you dynamic, smooth and battery friendly performance.
Screen display & aspect ratio- Like Lumia 820, Lumia 720 has a 4.3 inch WVGA touch screen with 800x480 pixels. The display is average. The screen is super sensitive and you can work on it comfortably even when wearing gloves. Again like Lumia 820, Lumia 720 comes with an aspect ratio of 15:9 which gives wide screen display. It uses ClearBlack technology for good viewing angles and under sun visibility.
Body & design- The body of Lumia 720 has a 4.3 inch touchscreen stretched across most of its fascia. The curved display is covered by Corning Gorilla glass 2. With 127.9x67.5x9.0mm dimensions and weight of 128 g, Lumia 720 is a much light weight and slim handset in comparison to other Lumia phones. When it comes to weight and sturdiness, it is much like original Lumia 800. It has a polycarbonate body like Lumia 920. Lumia 720 will be available in white, black, yellow, red and blue colors. The exchangeable panels are really bright and colorful with shades like red, magenta, cyan and yellow.
Camera- The 6.7 megapixel camera of Lumia 720 with an impressive f1.9 aperture gives great images. I would say the camera feature is good in all Lumia phones. It comes with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and LED flash. Unlike Lumia 920 and 820 which capture videos at 1080p, Lumia 720 captures HD videos at 720p only. The camera features include geotagging, touch focus, landscape orientation and still image editor.
Memory- Lumia 720 has 512 MB internal storage which can be expanded by up to 64GB by using microSD cards.
Connectivity- Like Lumia 920, this phone supports NFC. Other connectivity features include USB v2.0, Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n.
Battery - Like Lumia 920, Lumia 720 has a strong 2000 mAh battery which can easily last up to 520 hours in standby mode. Even Lumia 820 does not have this strong battery. It gives 23.4 hours of talk-time on 2G networks and 13.4 hours in 3G networks. The option of wireless charging is available in this phone like in Lumia 920 and 820.
Nokia Lumia 520
Nokia Lumia 520 was announced along with Lumia 720 in the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona this year. Nokia faces a tough competition in market and in order to maintain its position, perhaps Nokia is trying to bring out a Windows Phone 8 in every price range. I am saying so because Nokia Lumia 520 is expected to be priced around Rs. 9,500 only. Lumia 520 is a replacement for Nokia Lumia 510 launched last year. It will be competing with HTC Windows Phone 8S, HTC Desire C, Sony Xperia Miro and other low end Androids which are quite affordable. Lumia 520 will be released soon. Let us take a look at its features.
Operating System & applications- Nokia Lumia 520 runs on the Windows Phone 8 OS. It comes with Nokia-exclusive apps like Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive 3. If you use pre-installed maps, you won't need an internet connection for Nokia Drive 3 which is a voice guided application. Lumia 520 has another traveler-friendly reality app called Nokia City Lens which uses camera and tells local information about user's surroundings. You can use tag this information for your business. Lumia 520 also offers the full Office suite that allows you to work on Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Nokia has offered an impressive number of apps even at the slashed price. You get Groupon app which tells about the deals and ongoing offers in your local area and the Nokia HERE app which integrates all local guides, maps and satellite views.
Power & performance- Lumia 520 is powered by the dual core 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8227 processor which is impressive for a low budget phone but yet far behind the quad core processors' power performance of HTC One X+ or Google Nexus 4. The HTC Windows Pone 8S uses the same processor. It also has an Adreno 305 GPU. The performance is decent. Moreover, there is 512 MB RAM which is good for playing games, watching videos or simply problem free internet surfing.
Screen display - Lumia 520 has a 3.8 inch IPS LCD display with a 800x480 pixels resolution. This gives you around 233 ppi of pixel density which is just average. You cannot call it up with the HD best standard. Moreover, the screen is pretty small in comparison to high end Lumias like Lumia 920 (4.5 inch) and 820 (4.3 inch). You get a decent sized onscreen keyboard and enough space to pinch-to-zoom but you would not have been able to manage all this had the screen been any smaller than present. It uses ClearBlack technology for under sun visibility and good viewing angles. The ClearBlack filter cuts down the glare. The display is covered by Gorilla glass.
Body & design- With 9.9mm thickness and weight of 124 g, Lumia 520 is slim and light. In fact, it is too slim for its features. It has a well-built polycarbonate body and a new design. You get bright plastic cases in available in orange, magenta, yellow, cyan, lime green, black and white colors. These cases have different colors on inside.
Camera- The 5 megapixel autofocus camera of Lumia 520 has no flash. There is no secondary camera. It seems that in order to keep the cost low, compromises are made in the camera feature. You can add lenses from Windows Store which has about 40 lenses available for free. Other features include Panorama view, Smart Shoot and Bing Vision. It records HD videos at 720p.
Memory- Lumia 520 has 512MB RAM. It has 8 GB internal storage. We can say that the storage is generous for its price. Moreover, you can further expand it up to 64GB by using microSD cards.
Connectivity- Lumia 520 supports dual band and hence plays fine with 2.5GHz and 5GHz frequencies. Like Lumia 920, this WP8 device has features like Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Wi-Fi hotspot.
Battery - Lumia 520 has a 1430 mAh battery which is very disappointing. It is definitely not enough for a dual core processor. The good thing is that since the back cover of Lumia 520 is removable, you get an option of carrying extra battery.
Nokia Lumia 940
Lumia 940, the latest Nokia smartphone is the successor of Nokia Lumia 920. It runs on the advanced Windows Phone 8.5 and is an absolute masterpiece when it comes to design. Lumia 940 is probably the last flagship smartphone in the series. Let's take a look at its features. Since, no such phone displays on the Nokia's official website, these are only rumored features.
Operating System & applications- Nokia Lumia 940 runs on the most advanced Windows Phone 8.5 OS. Nokia Lumia 920 has Windows Phone 8 OS. Expect the interface to be extremely bright and vivid. Lumia 940 includes all the features which Lumia 920 has.
Power & performance- Like Lumia 920, Lumia 940 is powered by a Dual-core 1.5GHz processor which is super-fast. However, the same problem may persist in Lumia 940 too. In Lumia 920, there were long loading times during download of some top quality applications.
Screen display & aspect ratio- Lumia 940 has the same screen size as Lumia 920. It has a 4.5 inch capacitive touch screen with 1280x768 TFT LCD display. This will give a wide clear display for reading e-books or surfing internet. Like Lumia 920, Lumia 940 also uses enhanced IPS screen technology called 'PureMotion HD+' which delivers wide viewing angles for watching media.
Body & design- The super-stylish Lumia 940 has 4.5 inch touchscreen stretched across most of the fascia. The curved display is covered by protective Gorilla glass. While Lumia 920 is one of the bulkiest high-end handsets in market, expect Lumia 940 to be much lighter and thinner. The phone will be available in autumn green, mortuary blue and gunshot red colors.
Camera- The 35 megapixel camera is the best camera I have heard of in smartphones. The camera of Lumia 920 gives excellent images but even that's only 8.7 megapixels. It captures HD videos at 1080p and uses PureView technology, Carl Zeiss Tessar lens & high power dual LED flash.
The release date or price of Lumia 940 is yet unknown but it is expected to be out this year itself.
