Office Starter 2010 - Issues, solutions and FAQ
Are you having problems with your Office Starter 2010? Read this article to find solutions to some of the common problems encountered with the Office Starter 2010.
If you recently purchased a Windows 7 laptop or desktop, most probably you would have received Microsoft Office 2010 included in it.
In this article, I am going to discuss some of the commonly reported problems of Microsoft Office Starter 2010.
How can I use "fit to one page" option in Office 2010 Starter?
The full suite of Word 2010 has a command called "Shrink One Page" which can be used to shrink the page into a single page if it slightly exceeds the page. This is a great option to avoid wasting a paper when you have a few words or lines exceeding a page. Unfortunately, this option is not enabled by default in MS Word. You have to customize your toolbar to get access to this hidden command. Since Office Starter 2010 does not allow you to customize the toolbar, there is no option to use this option in your Starter edition, which is one of the limitations of Office Starter 2010. Your best bet is to manually arrange elements of your page to fit them in a page. You can do things like reducing margin, reducing font size, removing some unwanted content, adjust line spacing, adjust paragraph spacing etc.
I currently have Office Starter 2010. Now I have purchased Office 2010 paid software. Should I uninstall Office Starter 2010 before I install the professional version?
Many people have reported various installation errors if they try to run Office 2010 without uninstalling Office Starter 2010. The best approach is to uninstall the starter edition first and then install the Office Professional 2010.
My Office Starter 2010 is corrupt and is not opening. How can I uninstall and reinstall Office Starter 2010?
You cannot download Office Starter 2010 officially. The only way you can get it is from the your OEM computer. If your computer came with a CD/DVD, then look in the disk. There may be an installer for Office Starter 2010.
Some computer manufacturers may provide an option to download the Office Starter from their support site. For example, take a look at this page where HP is offering options to repair Office Starter 2010.
If you like to uninstall or repair other Office Suite, read the support documentation here.
When I try to open Office Starter 2010, I am getting the error "Cannot be opened"
Microsoft has suggested this solution for this problem:
1. Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall "Microsoft Office Starter 2010"
2. Go to your Windows start menu, click on "Microsoft Office 2010" under "All Programs" and then select the option "Use". This will reinstall your Office Starter 2010.
How can I reinstall Office Starter 2010?
You can uninstall Office Starter from your Add/Remove programs. To install Office Starter again, use one of the following options:
1. If you see "Microsoft Office 2010" in your start menu, then click on the "Use" option under it to reinstall the Starter edition.
2. If you have a CD/DVD that was shipped with your new computer, see if you can locate the installer for the Office Starter edition.
3. Do a complete system restore from your disk that came with your computer. Remember, you will lose all your data if you do this complete restore.
My Office Starter installation hangs at the end. How to resolve this?
Microsoft has given a Fix It utility (Microsoft Fix it 50605) to solve the installation problem. You can download the Fix It utility from here.
This Fix It utility makes some registry modifications, which you may perform manually if you like messing with the Registry!
Edit the following registry key:
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Under the "Name", look for "AppData". Right-click on "AppData" and choose "Modify" to edit the value of this registry entry. Change the value in the Value data field to "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming". Click on the "OK" to save the value.
Now try re running the Office Starter 2010 installer and you should not have any problems in completing the installtion.
I received a document from some one. When I opened it in Office Starter, it is showing some previous edits and review comments. I am unable to remove them in Office Starter. What can I do now?
Office Starter does not allow you to edit comments or remove reviewer remarks. Your best option is to copy the relevant text in to Notepad and copy paste it back to Word Starter so that any extra formatting and other review comments will be gone.
When I open Office 2010 starter, I am getting the error "click-2-run configuration failure". How to solve this problem?
I am tired of the limitations of Starter edition. How can I upgrade my Office starter 2010 to full version of Office?
If you are ready to pay and upgrade, it is easy to upgrade. Click on the Home tab in your ribbon toolbar. You will see the option "Purchase". Click on it to proceed with the upgrade to full version of Microsoft Office.
