How to change or choose the default mail address in Outlook.com

Did you create a cool Outlook.com mail address but trying to figure out how to make it the default mail id to send mails from? Read this post to learn how to change your default mail id while sending mails.

Outlook.com allows you to create email aliases or add other emails to your account so that you can send emails from the Outlook.com account.

When you compose an email, you can choose any one of your email addresses as the FROM address. By default, your primary email address will be selected as the FROM address. You may click on the selector arrow next to your name on the top left corner of mail composing page to change and choose any mail id.

How to change the default mail address in Outlook.com?

If you associate a new email address or created a new alias, you may want to use that as your primary email address to send mails from. Here is how you can choose your default mail address:

1. Login to Outlook.com

2. Click on the gear icon and select "More mail settings"

3. In the "Managing your account" page, click on "Sending/receiving email from other accounts". You will be taken to a page which shows your primary email address as well as other email aliases.

4. Look for the title "You can send mail from these accounts"
Click on the link "default" next to any alias or email address that you want to make the default address.

That is it. Try to compose a new email. You will see the newly selected address is populated as your FROM address.

If you don't see your alias listed there in the options to choose the default mail address, you can create an Outlook.com email alias first and then come back here to make it the default email address for your new emails.
