Microsoft's Surface would be comparatively heavier than its main competitor iPad. Surface's weight will be around 676 grams whereas iPad weighs around 662 gram and 652 gram for its Wi-Fi plus cellular and Wi-Fi variants, respectively.

There would be a slight difference when it comes to thickness. Apple's iPad is around 9.4mm thick whereas Surface would be around 9.3mm thick.

Connectivity options in Apple's iPad include 30-pin connector port, Bluetooth, built-in speakers and SIM card. Surface's windows RT variant can be connected through USB 2.0 and antennae whereas Windows 8 Pro can be connected through USB 3.0, speakers, antennae and mini port video.

This is clearly a total shift from Microsoft's current strategy, where they usually provide software to smartphones and personal computer manufacturing. Benefits of manufacturing and selling integrated tablets PC could be one reason behind this sudden shift.

Loss Triggered it?
Microsoft suffered losses in smartphone market. This could be one of the reasons behind jumping into manufacturing of integrated tablets. Besides low popularity of Google's Android tablets could be another reason behind big move.
