SEO is Search Engine Optimization or optimizing your website for the search engines. Why would you want to optimize your website for a search engine? Let us try and understand how this concept works first before we head towards the technicalities.
Keyword and search engine function
When someone searches for something on a website they will enter their search term or query into the search box. Let us say they went to Google and entered "buy baby shoes". This term is known as a "keyword". Now Google displays results for all pages which it thinks are relevant to the term you searched for.
Notice I said what the search engine thinks it is relevant for the term we searched for. That is because Google and other search engines are after all just programs. They are not human beings. So how do these programs return relevant results, every time we search for something?
Each of these search engines has an algorithm (or program code) which performs some calculations each time it processes a website. The aim is to look at the website and determine what the website is all about. Then it categorizes the website as say a website about "baby shoes".

So next time someone searches for "baby shoes" chances are that this website will show up on the first page or subsequent pages. Search Engine Optimization is all about placing the right triggers in the right places, so that we can let the search engines know what the website is all about.
When placed properly these triggers or indicators will be picked up by the search engines. These triggers or things we do are known as optimizing a website for the search engines. This was what search engine optimization is all about. Now let us take a quick look at what these triggers are.
On Page SEO and Off Page SEO detail
There are two major types of SEO and they are On page seo and Off Page SEO. On Page SEO is performed on the page of the website. To perform on page SEO you must make sure that you identify a single keyword for a web page.
This keyword is known as the primary keyword and has to be located in the Title, H1 tags, body content, image alt tags. The key is to integrate these keywords and variations of these keywords without overstuffing or spamming the search engines.
Off Page SEO on the other hand is performed off the website. These include link building, RSS Submissions, Article Marketing, Blog Commenting, Guest Posting, Bookmarking.

A new trend in SEO is Social Media Marketing. Social Media has emerged as one of the most important ways to share content and resources. Since this media is based on making connections, building credibility, building and maintain relations, it is a very impactful and powerful form of marketing on the Internet.
Some marketers club social media marketing under off page SEO, while others treat it as a separate entity.
Whatever be the case, it is important that a website owner keeps himself abreast with the latest technologies in SEO, so that he can ensure that his content is seen and appreciated by people.
