In this Windows 8 tips series, I will show how to close a Metro App using touch gestures as well as using mouse.
As part of reimaginging Windows, Microsoft removed the resizing options and close buttons from Windows 8 Apps. Without the close button, it may appear tricky and confusing to close Metro apps unless you know the correct gestures to do the same.
How to close Windows 8 Metro Apps using Mouse
To close a Metro App using Mouse, follow the steps below:
Point your mouse on the top edge of the screen
Wait until the cursor changes
Click and drag the app all the way down to the bottom of the screen
Release the mouse when it reaches the bottom
Your App will be closed now and you can see the Metro Start screen
Close Metro App using Keyboard
If you don't have a touch screen and have no mouse, you can use your keyboard itself to close any Metro App. Simply press
ALT + F4
in the traditional manner to close any Windows 8 Metro Apps.
Close Metro Apps from Task Manager
This is not really a nice way of closing an App, but is a guaranteed way to kill any app that you don't want to stay. You can press
ALT+CTRL+DEL
to launch the Task Manager. Select the non-responding app which you want to close and then click on "End Task".
Your app will be instantly closed without giving a chance to save any of the unsaved data.
How to close Windows 8 Metro Apps using Touch gestures?
If you have a touch screen, you can simply swipe from the top to the bottom to close a Metro App in Windows 8. This is the easy way to close Metro Apps if you are running Windows 8 on a tablet PC or other touch screen devices.
