Are you a programmer interested in trying your hands on Windows 8 Metro style Apps? In this article, I will explain how to develop Windows 8 Metro apps, what technologies you can use and what tools you need.
Microsoft is introducing a new style of applications called "Metro Apps". The Metro Style Apps have a slightly different look and feel from the traditional Windows applications.
Languages and Technologies to develop Windows Metro Apps
According to Microsoft, as of now, there are 3 sets of technologies that can be used to develop Windows 8 Metro Apps:
HTML5, JavaScript and CSS3: If you are a web developer with no expertise in any programming languages like C#, you can choose this method. You can use simple HTML 5 and CSS 3 to develop intuitive Metro Apps.
.NET, WPF and Silverlight technologies: If you are a traditional Windows developer with expertise in .NET, go for this approach. With XAML in the front end and any .NET language in the backend, you can develop highly powerful Metro Apps. You can choose to develop metro apps using any .NET language including C#, VB.NET or C++.
DirectX: Are you a game developer with strong skills on DirectX to develop graphically rich applications? You can use DirectX to develop Metro Apps using native C++ to take advantage of the graphics hardware.
