You can find the review of the latest Sony Xperia S in this article. I have provided information on its features, specifications and provided a review of the phone based on various factors to help you decide if the phone is worth your hard earned money.
Did I miss something in the title? Absolutely not! Sony and Ericsson have now parted their ways and so there will be no more Sony-Ericsson mobiles anymore and more specifically, all the products from either company will be marketed by their respective solo names viz. Sony and Ericsson. Sony has recently launched the much awaited Sony Xperia S which is currently Sony's flagship product and which has a whooping 12 Mp with Sony Bravia's HD technology based touch screen which can make people drool all over it. The phone is sure to take on some of the well reputed phone brands in the market with its killer looks and features and looks quite promising. Let us now know more about this phone in detail.
The Sony Experia S has a relatively plastic finish as compared to some of the better built phones like the iPhone 4S and has dimensions of 128 x 64 x 10.6 mm. With a weight of 144 g, the Sony Xperia S is slightly on the bulkier side of majority of Smartphones.
Network connectivity and Memory
The Sony Xperia S is a 3G capable Smartphone with built in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC (near field communication). It comes with a micro USB port for connecting with computer. The phone however does not include 4G or 4G LTE technology which is definitely a let down for most of the people who would have loved to experience the fast speed of 4G network in their smartphones.
The Sony Xperia S comes with 1GB RAM and 32 GB inbuilt memory which will ensure that your phone can handle the applications and games quite efficiently and at the same time provide enough space for your documents, MP3s and videos. The Sony Xperia S however lacks an external memory card slot which again can be a serious letdown for the phone.
Display and Camera
On the positive side, the Sony Xperia S comes with a 4.3" LED backlit capacitive HD display which is based on Sony's infamous
Bravia HD technology
and provides great viewing experience and colors. It comes with a high resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and 16 million colors which is clearly one of the best in the business and can be a selling point for this otherwise ill fated phone. It also supports multi-touch and can sense 10 fingers at a time a feature seen in iPhones and some high end smartphones.
The Sony Xperia S comes with a 12 MP camera (although there are already many 12 MP or higher Smartphones in the market and Nokia 808 even provides a resolution of 44 MP) with auto-focus and a LED flash. It is also capable to take HD videos at 1080 pixels at 30 frames per second and hence you can record all your memorable moments in a high resolution. The secondary camera is also quite impressive with a 1.3 MP resolution and video shooting at 720 pixels which will ensure a great video calling experience. Also clicking self portraits can be fun with this phone.
Operating System and Processor
The Sony Xperia S however comes with a rather old Android v2.3 Gingerbread operating system. However Sony is planning to provide a v4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade to its users in some time soon. The Sony Xperia S comes with a 1.5 GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset which is quite fast compared to many of the Smartphones available in the market most of which manage to clock at 1 GHz to 1.2 GHz and hence can provide a great and smooth experience both while using applications and playing HD games. It also comes with the Adreno 220 graphics processor unit for the high resolution display perfect for watching videos and playing games. Now who can resist that!
Batteryand other features
The Sony Xperia S comes with a 1750 mAh Li-ion battery which can provide you with a good 7 hour to 8 hour talk time in 3G connectivity. Although the talk time is not as good as some of the Smartphones coming up, it certainly can provide a decent battery backup for the usual office goer. It supports the latest HTML 5, Adobe Flash, Stereo radio with RDS, GPS, Java and most of the features expected from a high end Smartphone.
The
Sony Xperia is priced at around $600
which is more in league with smart phones such as Samsung S2 and LG Prada 3 etc and hence can be a deciding factor while deciding which phone to go for. Although it cannot beat the likes of Samsung Galaxy S3 or the iPhone in terms of features, it definitely scores in the look department as well as price.
Final verdict
From the review it is clear that the phone can turn heads with the great display and capture some of the best shots. However lack of external memory card slot can be a big concern with many people as people have started carrying large files in their Smartphones and would always love the option to add extra memory. Also as taking HD videos can consume a great amount of memory, it has become one of the feature buyers look at while buying an electronic gadget. Also it will be best if one takes into account that the battery is fitted to the phone like Apple iPhones and cannot be removed by the user. Hence one has to contact the dealer in case battery replacement is required just like Apple products.
Although 4G is currently not widely available, but, it would have been better if the phone came with 4G as the technology is picking up pace and provides faster web browsing experience. Also Sony has taken a big gamble by using only two cores for the Xperia S as Smartphones are coming with faster quad core processors like HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S3 etc before which the smartphone would look like a lost child.
In all, the phone provides decent features and looks for someone who is looking for a mid range priced phone and good looks but it is definitely not for someone who wants the best the world of technology can provide him or her.
