Did you identify a cool domain name but just to find that is already taken by someone else? You can still backorder the same domain name and grab it if the owner doesk not renew the same. Learn what is domain backordering, how to back order a domain name and the backorder process.
I was recently looking for a domain name related to travel and tourism in India and I found one of the cool domain names that I was trying to register was already registered by someone but was expiring within few days. So, I quickly went ahead and backordered the domain name and decided to wait and see if I would be lucky to get that domain name.
What is domain back ordering?
Domain backorder
is the process of placing an order for a domain name that is already registered by someone and have your back order service provider watch for expiration and automatically register it for you in case of expiration.
In the olden days, if my favorite domain name is already taken by someone else, I used to manually check every few days to see if the owner fail to renew it so that I can grab it. If the domain expires and I fail to notice it quickly, someone else would grab it. With domain back order services, it has become an easy process. We no longer need to manually keep checking for expiring domains. The back order service will handle everything automatically including monitoring for expiration of domain, register it for you when it expires or place an auction if there are multiple back orders for the same domain.
Domain Back order process
The
domain back order process
varies from provider to provider. Each domain back order service has its own process to backorder domain names.
The general process for domain backordering would be like this:
1. You search and find your favorite domain names that is already registered by someone.
2. You back order that domain name through the domain registrar
3. You wait while the domain registrar keep looking for the same domain name availability. Even after a domain name registration expires, there will be grace period, redemption period etc which would allow the original registrant to retain the domain name.
4. Your domain backorder service will keep looking for the availability. The domain registrar has many options to renew the domain even after it expires.
5. If the domain name goes on auction, your back order service will place an order for it automatically. Some back order services like GoDaddy will accept multiple backorders which will make an auction to choose the winner.
GoDaddy Domain Backorder process
The domain back ordering process at GoDaddy.com is pretty much same as most other back order services. GoDaddy accepts multiple back orders for the same domain. So, if there are multiple orders for the same domain, GoDaddy will place an auction and whoever bids the highest money during the auction period will get the domain.
Only some of the TLDs are supported by GoDaddy for backordering. Also, certain domain names like brand names and trademarks may not be available for registration.
To participate in domain backorders with GoDaddy, you need to pay $10 as the fees and this include your first year registration fees. If the domain goes on auction due to multiple backorders, then you have to pay the excess amount during the auction process.
One of the major complaints about GoDaddy backordering was, they do not make it very obvious that others also can back order the same paying the same fees and when the name becomes available, GoDaddy places an auction which will make people compete each other and potentially end up paying a huge amount for their favorite domain.
Surprisingly, I found out today that GoDaddy accepts new backorders for the same domain even after it goes for an auction. I placed a backorder for a domain, it went to auction by having myself as the first bidder and later on the same day, my partner was able to place a backorder for the same domain name.
A nice cool feature with GoDaddy backordering is, you can change the domain name you backordered anytime unless you got it and apply the fees you paid to some other domain names you want to back order. So, your money is never wasted with GoDaddy domain backorder service.
