Detailed review of iOS game- Hunger Games: Girl on Fire

The Hunger Games: Girl on Fire already has a red carpet spread for it. With 3 successful novels and a trio of hit films it has an established family set up to get a fiery start. It has been developed by Canabalt, has the audio from music of Danny Baronowsky and visuals from Super Crate Box's Vlambeer. Sadly however, the game fails to deliver on the expectations one would have with such a title.

The game play has almost nothing from the film story. This might disappoint the fans of the film but then the non-fans have an interesting game set up to enjoy. Your character in the game is Katniss Everdeen, who is a expert archer. The game starts with you sprinting through the wood with a group of tracker jackers (killer bees) trying to attack you. You have to take them with your bow and arrows.

There is no tutorial in the game and you have to find out the controls yourself. The controls are easy to find and get your hands on. Katniss runs on two levels of lands, an alternate up or down alternates the level on which she is running. Constant motion of up and down will help you to avoid the sea of projectiles in your way. Click anywhere outside the body of Katniss and this will fire an arrow in that direction. These arrows are you only combat tools to protect yourself from the tracker jackers. If the tracker jacker is successful in giving you a bite then for the first bite the whole screen will go blue and disoriented. The second time you are stung the game is over.

Girl of Fire has an excellent game interface. The 16 bit graphics have been presented colorfully and beautifully. As Katniss runs at higher speeds the graphics still look interesting. Audio by Danny Baronowsky fits blends perfectly into the game, creating a catchy rhythm and tension as you play the game.

Now for the bad parts- The controls stumbles, the program seems to have difficulty in understand whether the command is for an attack or for a change in the level. Even if we ignore the controls the game has a very high difficulty level. If you combine this high difficultly level of the game along with the problem in the game, even a little misinterpretation by the game in understanding your commands means an early end to your chance. These two factors combined might keep away a few players.

The other bad aspect of the game is its very short run period. After you have completed the game there is no replay value as the time period remains the same. After running through the jungle for some time and having achieved a score of 15,000 to 23,000 you reach the bot stage. Here you need to dodge a few electrical traps and the game ends with the credits. This makes the game lose any potential to attract the player for another game as there is no more time play to compete with your previous score. Once you have completed this short game there is nothing interesting to make you play again.

It is quite clear that the reason why The Hunger Games: Girl on Fire is available for free is that it is simply a promotion for the film. Even with the negative stigma associated with the game which is developed purely for advertising, I can't help but feel a little let down by the lack for hardwork done to extend the game. With such a great history in developing game apps, such a good game interface and great music, you can't help but feel that if only the game developers would had made the game a little longer with more replay value in it, Girl on Fire would have been an excellent side scroller game.
