Go to the VMware settings under System tools and enable CPU PAE / NX. Make sure it is marked on the Processor tab. If not, check the box. It is also necessary that you adjust CPU (64 bit mandatory) on the host, the VT-X support.

In the Vbox, you will find PAE / NX system. Choose processor. Go to Display and tick the 2D and 3D options in Video tab.

Once all this is done, press OK and run your Windows 8 again. This time, it should work without any error.

I have been using VMware for years and many versions. There is no such thing as Sytem Tools.

And what happens if you get this message on physical hardware? I've tried this on a T42p, which from all the places I've looked for specifications is quite capable on running WIndows8.

I'm trying to install on Dell 700m and I get this error (not in VM). There's no solution to this yet.

@Rick Desautels: He's talking about Virtual Box, not VMWare. In Virtual Box there is a System menu and a checkbox for "PAE / NX" for the CPU. In my release the checkbox is in Machine > Settings. Then in the Settings dialog that appears you select "System" from the leftmost list of items. On the right side you then select the Processor tab. On that tab there's a checkbox under "Extended features" labelled "Enable PAE/NX" (the help description states: "When checked the Physical Address Extension (PAE) feature of the host CPU will be exposed to the virtual machine".

Note that you must shut down (power off) the VM before you can make these types of changes to the VM.
