Bing adds a new feature to identify people by Linked Pages

How many times you have searched for your old friends and got confused on who is the actual person from the huge list of people listed in the search results? Just for example, search for Tony John in Bing.com and you will see several people having the same name listed. If you haven't met me before, how will you identify who is the actual Tony John you are looking for?

The search engine giant Bing.com today released a new feature called "Linked Pages". This new feature will enable people to link webpages about them to a their online identity (Facebook profile) and group pages related to them together. Using this feature, I can pick and link any webpages in Bing search results to my profiles and help my friends identify me and my web pages on the Bing search results.

How Bing Linked Pages work

Individuals can enable Linked Pages feature in Bing Search and then manually link selected pages in the Bing search results to their Facebook profile. When your Facebook friends search for your name in Bing.com, they will see your linked pages grouped at the top of the search results.

You can link any pages related to you including pages related to your work place, school, college etc. You can start with few pages and add a lot more later.

When people search for your name, they will see your linked pages grouped in Bing search results. I have linked few pages to me using the Facebook App and this is what my Facebook friends will see if they search for my name in Bing:

You can add links not only about you, but you can link the pages about your Facebook friends too. It may appear to be a privacy concern, but your friends will get notified by Facebook (depending on the notification settings) about the link about them and they can remove the links if they don't like it.

To experiment with it, I added some non relevant links to my wife's Facebook profile. The Facebook for Bing Linked Pages automatically posted an entry in to her wall. She was able to remove the link from her wall.

There is a concern here. When you link a page to your friends profile, he/she will get notified through a Facebook wall post. They have the option to remove this link, but just in case they remove the wall post first, they won't see the link to remove the linking anymore.

How to use Bing Linked Pages feature

Bing uses a Facebook App to help your Facebook friends identify you in Bing search results and helps you identify your friends. To use the Bing Linked Pages feature, you need to have a Facebook account.

To get started, go to Bing Linked Pages.

Click on the "Get Started" link. It will take you to the Facebook App authentication page and will ask your permission to access your Basic Info and post messages to Facebook as you.

Bing Linked Pages beta and errors
The Bing Linked Pages feature is currently under beta and seem to have issues. I tried to setup the Linked Pages in Bing and got the following error on the first attempt:
