In this Article I will explain you to overcome sharepoint designer issues with office 365 sharepoint online. One of the issue is sharepoint designer open up in Microsoft word document when attempting to open it via site actions; Site settings ; edit in sharepoint designer.

Office 365 SharePoint online team site can be opened by SharePoint designer to design the pages and modify the site pages. With Microsoft SharePoint designer 2010, You can create views, create a new master page, Create SharePoint solutions in order to meet the business needs. SharePoint designer helps to connect with external data like lists and forms. In Microsoft Office 365 you can use SharePoint designer to edit the master page of the public facing website.

SharePoint designer sometimes throws the error when you try to edit an SharePoint online team site or Office 365 public website with SharePoint designer. The happens when the user doesn't have appropriate permission or synchronization errors. One of the Common issue with the SharePoint designer is When an user opens Office 365 Team site and Clicks Site Actions ; Site Settings ; Edit in SharePoint designer, " The SharePoint designer prompts you to download the SharePoint designer and opens up an blank document in Microsoft Word". This issue may occur due to the HTML editing tab sets default as word in the internet options and to resolve this issues we need to change it as Microsoft SharePoint designer.

To Troubleshoot the Error you may follow the below mentioned steps:

Log in to your office 365 account in Internet Explorer.

Click Tools >> Internet Options >> Click on the Programs Tab >> Hover over to the HTML Editing Tab >> Near the HTML editor box click on the Down arrow and select Microsoft SharePoint designer as Default >> Click Apply >> Click OK.

Now you can open the SharePoint online team site with SharePoint designer without any issues and start editing the pages.
