Aakash tablet, the world's cheapest tablet and also a proud 'Made in India' product is now free for all university students accross the country. HRD Minister , Kapil Silbal launched the world's cheapest tablet as 'Aakash' on October 5th at New Delhi with the aim to deliver e-learning and also to bridge the digital divide between rich and poor students. In just 21 days after release, the device manufacturing company Datawind has got over 21 million bookings. The Indian Government handled the proud project to the Canadian company Datawind. But later, with aim to make the product in India, Datawind collaborated with Hyderbad based company called 'Quad Electronics Solutions' and manufactured the product at Hyderabad.

Aakash 2 Tablet for Free to all University Students

The tablet couldn't satisfy the customer needs and rumors are out as a 'Failed Tab'. IIT-Rajasthan noticed this and came up with better specification and features for better performance and longer battery life. The Indian Government took this as a challenge and asked Datawind to manufacture the product with proposed specifications and features by IIT-Rajasthan. But, Datawind declined the proposal and said it is highly impossible to manufacture the product with the proposed specifications as it would cost more money to make it.

There were many scuffles between IIT-Rajasthan and Datawind in manufacturing the product. Recently, Government announced that they decided to take back the Aakash2 Tablet project deal from IIT-Rajasthan. But surprisingly, HRD minister and other IT Department officials announced that the Aakash 2 Tablet will be made 100% Indian and we will include 3 more IIT's to the project including IIT-Rajasthan to make all components Indian. Also said, Aakash 2 Tablet will be delivered to students at free of cost.

How Students get Aakash 2 Tablet for Free ?

HRD Minister, Kapil silbal specified that the Aakash 2 Tablet would cost Rs.1,500/- and will be given at 50% Government subsidy price of Rs.750/- to all Universities. The rest Rs.750/- will be bared by the respective Universities and will be given to their students at free of cost. However the Commercial Aakash 2 Tablet would cost Rs.2,500/-.
