Windows server 2003 and 2008 are the operating systems mainly used for remote virtual machines(remote desktops). It is a server operating system designed by Microsoft. This articles covers the basic understanding on this unique operating system used in cloud.


Windows server operating system is a part of Microsoft windows family. It has been specifically designed for remote desktops, virtual machines (which are actually servers). It was basically designed to aim at medium sized business, where a machine (a remote desktop) would remain connected to several desktops at several locations in order to maintain all the transactions and other important details. All the transactions taking place in each of the desktop will be finally updated into the remote desktop (the machines are essentially connected by internet). The operating system for the remote desktop is concern as the remote desktop serves as very essential purpose and needs a great deal of security. Windows server operating system was designed for this purpose. It provides a platform for development and deployment of web services and applications which use asp.net technology.

The most important specialty of windows server is providing a standard platform for building and hosting web application, XML web services and web pages. It is like a paradise location for a web developer. It supports all standard software which is compatible to other operating system members of windows family.

Windows server 2003


Windows server 2003 is available in both 32 bit as well as 64 bit version. It provides all the basic functionalities as provided by windows XP along with facilities for web development and management. Windows server 2003 was launched in several versions, with each version possessing unique functionalities and capabilities. Below is the list of all the editions along with their specialty.

Standard Edition


This edition offers secure internet connectivity and supports basic functions such as file sharing and printer sharing. The 32 bit version of this edition supports 4 GB RAM and runs on 4 processors, where as the 64 version has the capability of addressing up to 32 GB ram. The 32 bit version is available for students and free download is also provided.

Web Edition


The web edition is the most common in use for cloud systems. They have a very few vestigial process running and can be kept on powered on state over large period of times without any problem. It provides to processors and address up to 2 GB of RAM. In the web edition up to 10 concurrent connections for file sharing could be provided a time. This limits the number of local host connected to the server. You can also divide into several categories of access level in case one has a vivid user domain providing each category with unique administration privileges.

Data center Edition


This edition is mainly for highly secure domains. It has enhanced security and reliability.

Enterprise edition


This edition is mainly aimed for large business. It provides a very fast and secure operating system.

Windows server 2008 is the recent version of windows server operating systems.
