Windows 8 Developer Preview was released 6 weeks ago for use by general public. The start screen is the main place to view and access the apps in Windows 8. This article explains how to change the icons of the application tiles in the Start Screen of Windows 8 Developer Preview.


How to change the icons of Application tiles in Windows 8 Start Screen


We all know that Windows 8 Developer Preview was released few weeks ago for general public and many people have downloaded Windows 8 Developer Preview and started using it. Lot of new features were added to Windows 8. The Metro Start Screen is the main place where you can view and access apps in Windows 8. By default, the Start Screen displays shortcuts to Control Panel (Metro), Explorer, Windows Marketplace, and so many other metro apps. The Start Screen also displays shortcuts to the apps in the form of tiles when ever you install new applications.

It is possible to customize the Start Screen and Windows 8 allows you to personalize the Start Screen by either adding or removing default app tiles. It is also possible to move the tiles from one group to other group.

It is also possible for you to change the tile icon of applications in the Start Screen of Windows 8. You can change the icon of an app tile in Windows 8 without using any third party utility. This article guides you to the step by step instructions to change the icon of an app tile in Windows 8.

  • The first step you have to do is to switch to metro Start Screen. Then you have to Right-Click on the tile to see advanced option.
  • You have to now click on 'Advanced' option and then select 'Open file location' option. This opens up the shortcut of the application in Windows Explorer.
  • Now right-click on the shortcut's entry and select 'Properties' to open the Program properties. Now under 'Shortcut' tab, click on 'Change Icon' button and select an icon to replace the default icon.
  • Once you are done, click on 'OK' button and then click on 'Apply' button.
