Read this article to know more about USB 3.0 support in Windows 8 operating system. Yesterday, Microsoft announced that Windows 8 will support USB 3.0. In this article, I will discuss about USB 3.0 and its support with Windows 8 operating system.

Steven in the Building Windows 8 Blog announced that Windows 8 operating system will have USB 3.0 hardware support. Later, in his old post, while mentioning Windows 8 team, he given a list of groups which played their role in Windows 8 development. The second group in the team is App Store development. With that, we can clearly say Windows 8 operating system will have an App Store.

History of USB

In the year 1996, USB standards organization released first USB specifications. As per them, they defined two speeds for USB devices. They are Low speed with 1.5 Mbps and Full speed with 12 Mbps. In the year 2000, USB 2. 0 specifications came into existence with a new high speed of 480 Mbps. The new USB 2.0 is not supported for the old devices. In order to get full support, manufactures started to ship their PC's with two different controllers or they embedded a USB 2.0 hub. In the year 2008, USB standards organization released new USB 3.0 specification, and named the USB 3.0 devices as SuperSpeed device which has 5Gbps transfer capacity.

What is USB 3.0 ?

USB 3.0 is the new hardware. Prior to that, till today many of the USB device's which we are using are USB 2.0. With the help of USB 3.0 devices, we can get 10 times faster data transfer than USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 has improved power management which results in longer battery life. As per market sources, By 2015, all the new PC's are expected to offer USB 3.0 ports and many new USB 3.0 devices will be sold in the same year.

USB 3.0 support in Windows 8 operating system ?

Microsoft decided to support USB 3.0 in their upcoming Windows operating system. Till now, un-officially it is called as Windows 8 operating system. As per Steven post's The decision to invest in USB 3.0 was an easy one to make, but doing so without compromising the existing USB ecosystem was a big challenge to overcome. Our design had to follow the revised 3.0 specification precisely in order to enable emerging USB 3.0 hardware.

Till now, many computer devices which we are are using only supports USB 2.0. The USB devices which are available in the market are also USB 2.0 devices. It will be very difficult for the programmers to write a software which supports the upcoming USB 3.0 and also they have to make sure that all the USB 2.0 devices should work perfect on the new hardware.

So, from the past two posts in the Building Windows 8 Blog clearly says that Windows 8 will have
1) An App store
2) USB 3.0 support .
